The National Children’s Museum is a world-class museum that aims to spark the imagination and encourage children to dream. National Children’s Museum celebrates the joy of childhood through science, technology, engineering, arts, and math (STEAM) exhibits and programs.

The National Children’s Museum is seeking a reliable and responsible Manager of Finance + Accounting to join our organization. Reporting to the Vice President of Finance + Operations, this position supports the financial operations of the Museum. 

Responsibilities include

Managing accounts payable and accounts receivable for education and grant programming;

Investigating and reconciling discrepancies in AP/AR;

Preparing and managing the Museum’s cash procedures and weekly bank deposits;

Reconciling ledgers and accounts;

Preparing and submitting monthly DC sales tax documents;

Forecasting and monitoring cash flow;

Regularly reviewing and reconciling all of the Museum’s bank accounts;

Providing updates to the Museum financial policies and procedures and implement internal controls to ensure consistent compliance;

Assisting the VP of Finance and Operations in the annual audit process, including Universal Guidance audit of Federal Grant Spending;

Assisting the VP of Finance and Operations in the annual budget development process; 

Ensuring compliance with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP);

Collaborating with the Advancement team on  grant expense tracking and compliance;

Navigating grant regulations and requirements;

Upholding the highest standards of compliance and confidentiality;

Other finance and accounting duties as assigned. 

RequirementsWhat we believe are important experiences + traits for this role

Bachelor’s degree in accounting or finance;

2-4 years of non-profit accounting experience, or a combination of experience and education;

Adept knowledge of non-profit accounting principles;

Demonstrated effective organizational skills and a high level of attention to detail;

Respect for confidentiality of sensitive information;

Strong discretionary and customer service perspective;

Ability to thrive in a collaborative environment;

Proficiency in Google Suite, Microsoft Excel, and accounting software.  Experience with Quickbooks, Expensify, Shopify, and Bill.com are desirable; 

Understanding of the Federal Government framework for grants management and Universal Guidance audit experience is highly desirable; 

CPA are highly desirable, although not required. 

 

Schedule

This position is in-person within our office in Washington, DC (Federal Triangle / Metro Center) with flexibility to work remotely one day per week. 

Compensation

$65, 000 – $80,000 Annually, commensurate with experience.
