Description
The Peabody Essex Museum (PEM), one of the largest and most dynamic art museums in the nation, is seeking a Head Registrar. For over 220 years, PEM has been an anchor in the community, serving as a gathering place where anyone can learn, derive inspiration, and gain a deeper appreciation for shared human experiences from around the globe and through time. The Museum’s collection of art, architecture and culture includes more than 850,000 objects, 23 historic structures and more than 350,000 books and over a linear mile of manuscripts.
Reporting to the James B. and Mary Lou Hawkes Director of Collections, the full-time Head Registrar is responsible for general oversight and management of all aspects of the Registration department and coordinated departmental support for the implementation of institutional initiatives. You will be responsible for management of all staff within Registration, including recruiting, training and professional development.
The Head Registrar will supervise permanent collections registrars and exhibition registrars, plan and direct all registration activities, including all incoming and outgoing loans, and processing new acquisitions. You will also develop and implement short and long range plans for computerization of the Museum’s collections.
Requirements
A B.A. in art, art history or museum studies or closely related fields required. At least 7-10 years experience in museum registration including all aspects of managing temporary/traveling exhibitions: loan contracts, budget preparation and management, insurance, packing and shipping, customs, indemnity and courier duties. Skills required include excellent organizational, communication and strong interpersonal skills, ability to manage multiple priorities, attention to detail, and previous managerial experience, and knowledge of collections management software, preferably MuseumPlus.
