The Richard H. Driehaus Museum, located in Chicago, IL, engages and inspires the global community through exploration and ongoing conversations in art, architecture, and design of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Its permanent collection and temporary exhibitions are presented in an immersive experience within the restored Samuel Mayo Nickerson Mansion, completed in 1883, at the height of the Gilded Age. The Museum’s collection reflects and is inspired by the collecting interests, vision, and focus of its founder, the late Richard H. Driehaus.

About the position 

The Public Engagement Coordinator is an integral part of a small, intensely focused team that bears responsibility for maintaining the Museum’s public engagement and programming portfolio and helps grow long-term support for the Museum. This position is ideal for an energetic self-starter with museum experience in programming, education, or events who wants to focus their efforts on career growth. 

Reporting to the Director of Public Engagement, the Public Engagement Coordinator coordinates an array of public programs related to the Driehaus Museum’s exhibitions, permanent collection, and issues in art, architecture, design, and the humanities from the Gilded Era. Programs include lectures, discussions, film screenings, symposia, workshops, and performances with the goal to engage a variety of audiences. With the addition of the Murphy Auditorium to our Museum campus in 2024, a distinct opportunity for expansion and growth is upon us and this position is a key part of that growth.

 

Principal Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Organize and prioritize multiple programs and other projects with varying timelines.
  • Monitor and maintain department records.
  • Manage program communications with participants, program partners, audience members, and Museum colleagues, including 
    • Serve as point of contact for customer service issues related to program registrants.
    • Serve as the primary program production liaison between the Department, and Events, Operations, and Facilities teams.
    • Recruit and schedule program staff and volunteers.
    • Participate in the delivery of contracts to vendors, invoice intake, and basic financial recordkeeping.
  • Prepare and proofread content for web pages, publicity and print materials, and work with Communications team to publish/print. 
  • Plan and administer program registration through Altru online system and email communication.
  • Administer room setup, technology, and other logistical needs for public programs to ensure their smooth operation and the highest standards of quality, accessibility, professionalism, and hospitality.                                                                                                                                       
  • Gather and analyze program statistics through an equity lens, identifying areas for improvement to enhance inclusivity.
  • Attend Learning Committee meetings, provide support and information as needed and maintain meeting records.
  • Participate in conceptualizing and executing long-term strategies for the Department’s activities, which may include special tour development.
  • Collaborate with colleagues across departments to foster a collaborative, inclusive, and cohesive working environment.

Position Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in art, architecture, or design history, museum studies, public history, humanities, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Preferred two years prior experience in museum setting.
  • Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Ability to take initiative, to work proactively, and with independence as well as collaboratively, in a cordial and professional manner with diverse populations.
  • Strong customer service and diplomacy skills.
