Job Description Summary

Reporting to the Senior Registrar within the Collections Division of the Penn Museum, the Associate Registrar will work with special collections, including human remains and other culturally sensitive materials. The Associate Registrar is responsible for conducting a museum-wide inventory of the physical human remains in the collection (regardless of Curatorial Section), which will include working in conjunction with at least one bio-archaeologist/bio-anthropologist to process & catalogue the material, as well as the NAGPRA Coordinator, the Curatorial Section Keepers & Curators as needed, and other Museum staff members. The Associate Registrar will assist with a comprehensive storage project to improve the storage of the Biological Anthropology Collection. The Associate Registrar will work regularly in the Museum’s collections database, EMu, and will assist in performing other Registrarial duties and collections-related research and administrative duties.

** This is a one-year term position, subject to renewal.

Job Responsibilities

  • Conduct a Museum-wide inventory of human remains in the collection, in conjunction with other inventory team members.
  • Assist with a comprehensive collections storage project to improve the storage conditions of the Biological Anthropology Collection.
  • Assist with collections-related research and administrative duties.
  • Help maintain the electronic data for human remains in the collections database, EMu.
  • Assist with other Registrarial-related duties and work with other collections staff.
  • Additional duties as assigned.

 

Qualifications

  • Minimum: Bachelor’s and 3 to 5 years experienced or equivalent combination of education and experience, required; with MA/MS in a field related to museum collections and/or an MA in Museum Studies (Registration/Collections Management) and 2 to 3 years’ registrarial experience, highly preferred.
  • Experience managing collections required; knowledge of archaeological and ethnographic materials required.
  • Working knowledge of biological anthropology collections preferred.
  • Computer literacy required.
  • Experience with collections management databases required, with EMu experience preferred; strong organizational skills and attention to detail required.
  • Ability to multi-task required.
  • Art-handling experience required.
  • Manual dexterity required.
  • Valid driver’s license required.
  • This position is typically sitting at a desk or table, in an office, library, computer room, or Stockroom or warehouse environment, occasionally lifting 25 to 50 lbs., intermittently sitting/standing/stooping.
