The Museum Educator Program at the Delaware Art Museum offers a select opportunity to develop hands-on experience and a full range of skills in museum and art education. Educators work closely with museum staff and collaborate with each other to design curriculums, lead tours, and facilitate programming that aligns with DelArt’s educational goals. Along with these primary responsibilities, Educators can gain added opportunities and exposure to the museum field by contributing to special projects, partnerships, and public programs in the Art & Learning Department. This program seeks applicants who will soon complete or have recently completed their undergraduate studies, are currently pursuing a graduate degree, or can demonstrate equivalent professional experience in their application. The program runs for up to 18 months. This is a part-time position offering compensation of $20/hour.
Duties include (but are not limited to):
- Lead in-gallery tours of the Museum’s permanent collection and special exhibitions, primarily to students grades K-12
- Collaborate with other Museum Educators and Art & Learning staff by sharing techniques, resources, and knowledge to improve our education curriculum and tour offerings
- Prepare for student tours by learning the tour curriculum, arriving at least 30 minutes early on the day-of, and ensuring that activities and tour aids for students are prepped in advance
- Participate in biweekly in-service days to update and maintain tour aids and resources, as well as to engage on-site with fellow Educators, Guides, and Art & Learning staff
- Occasionally assist teaching artist in facilitating studio art projects
HOURS & SCHEDULE
Museum Educators are expected to complete an average of 50 hours per month.
Educators must be available Thursdays from 9am – 11:30am for weekly student tours and Wednesdays from 11am-12:30pm for biweekly in-service days. Additional tour opportunities may arise, and Educators are encouraged to be available to lead 2 tours a week. Tours primarily take place between 9am and 12pm, Tuesday through Friday.
Additionally, Educators can fulfill monthly hours by participating in training (virtual or on-site), prepping curriculum and materials for tours, and other opportunities within the Art & Learning Department.
QUALIFICATIONS
Ideal skills and knowledge for this position include:
- A background in art education, art, history, and/or a related field
- Experience working with youth and student audiences
- Knowledge of and/or interest in art and culture, particularly the areas of focus in DelArt’s collection (Pre-Raphaelite art, American illustration, American art from 1960 to present)
- Able to work in both a collaborative professional environment and be self-motivated in individual work and responsibilities
Additional skills and knowledge that are desired but not required for this position include:
- Spanish proficiency
- Experience with diversity, anti-racism, implicit bias and/or trauma-informed education training
- Experience working with students with disabilities
- Experience working with English Language Learners
- Studio art experience
