Part-Time Family & School Programs Museum Educator

Poster House is the first museum in the United States dedicated exclusively to the design and history of posters. The museum opened to the public in New York City in June 2019. Through temporary rotating exhibitions, events, the permanent collection, and school programming, Poster House explores what posters say about society and how graphic design continues to impact the world with an emphasis on visual literacy. Poster House encourages a positive, supportive, and respectful working environment and takes an active interest in Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Accessibility concepts and processes within the organization.

Poster House is seeking a part-time, family & school programs educator and teaching artist to join the education department two days per week. The educator will lead programming for families, and for school groups and visitors ranging from preschool students through adults. 

Responsibilities: 

  • Lead interactive, inquiry-based tours and creative workshops in both museum and school settings in person at Poster House and on occasion, virtually. 
  • K-12 Field Trips:
  • Poster House offers 60-minute tours or 90-minute tours + workshops at the museum focusing on our current exhibitions. 
  • Programs are offered primarily in-person, with some virtual requests
  • K-12 Residency Program
  • Poster House offers in-school residency and partnership programs to deepen our relationships with K-12 schools. During these 2-6 session residencies, Poster House Educators lead programs both in schools and at the museum that help students gain a deeper understanding of poster design and the history of protest posters. 
  • College & University Field Trips
  • Similar to our K-12 offerings, Poster House offers 60-minute tours and 90-minute tours + workshops at the museum focusing on our current exhibitions. 
  • Weekend Family Programs
  • Ability to develop and lead monthly weekend Family Programs (12 per year), geared towards children ages 5-11
  • Accessibility Tours as needed
  • In-person and virtual Verbal Description tours for community members who are blind or have low vision (Verbal Description Tour training will be provided by Poster House, no prior experience needed) 
  • Occasional Adult Tours as needed, may be after hours
  • 60-minute tours for adult visitors, corporate retreats, etc. 
  • Communicate with FT and PT Education Staff and school teachers / collaborators on scheduling and planning.
  • Create and develop lesson plans for custom programs 
  • Develop and lead sessions for two (2) Education First Friday takeovers per calendar year
  • Alongside Poster House’s staff, participate in programming for West Side Fest and the Poster House Block Party annually 
  • Attend quarterly education meetings, and other Poster House meetings and professional development (paid time)
  • Attend (paid) trainings for each exhibition cycle 

Requirements:

  • At least 2 years experience in Education, History, Design History, Art History, or Fine Art is preferred.
  • Experience working in informal education, especially with early childhood and K-12 children, and multigenerational groups.
  • Ability to travel to all five boroughs for residency programs

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: 

  • Has strong facilitation skills, classroom management experience, and knowledge of inquiry-based pedagogy.
  • Ability to develop and lead interactive programming for families, geared towards children ages 5-11. 
  • Experience working with students with disabilities is a plus. 
  • Proficiency in ASL (American Sign Language) is a plus.

Location and Hours:

The Educator position is part-time and located at Poster House 119 W 23rd Street, New York, NY 10011. 

Must have availability on the same two (2) weekdays every week and one (1) weekend day per month, with availability to work occasional evenings.
