Salary: $45,000-$48,000


THE POSITION

The Special Collections Associate reports to the Seymour Adelman Director of Special Collections in Library and Information Technology Services (LITS) and works closely with other Special Collections staff to deliver exceptional service while promoting inclusion, diversity, equity and anti-racism. Special Collections provides access and programming around our collections of rare books, manuscripts, artworks, cultural heritage objects, digital collections, and the College archives.

The Special Collections Associate coordinates the daily operations of the department’s spaces and organizes the flow of researchers, classes, and special collections materials. Hires and trains students, registers visitors and fields questions from researchers. Ensures proper handling, retrieving, tracking, and shelving of rare, fragile, and unique Special Collections items. Assists with community outreach on social media in collaboration with Special Collections staff. Provides administrative support for the department and event support for programming and exhibitions. Participates in staff meetings and planning sessions and ongoing opportunities for professional development.

REQUIREMENTS

Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience. Excellent interpersonal communication skills and customer service, strong organizational abilities, attention to detail, and willingness to learn and help in a team environment. Demonstrated ability to learn to use various collections databases, finding aids, bibliographies, and integrated library systems. Demonstrated interest in learning how to handle rare and unique books, manuscripts, archival materials, art, and cultural artifacts. Ability to use carts and move boxes and cultural objects between spaces and buildings. Flexibility to work occasional nights and weekends.

Supervisory, project management, or training experience (preferred). Experience working in an academic environment, library, archive, gallery, or museum (preferred). Experience planning events and programs (preferred). Master’s degree or graduate work (preferred).
