Description
The Director of Institutional Giving and Government Grants will be responsible for planning, managing, and implementing activities that increase, diversify, and sustain external funding for the Brooklyn Museum’s programs and initiatives from foundations and government entities ahead of the Museum’s historic 200th anniversary and beyond. The Director will develop and drive institutional strategy to identify and pursue large-scale programmatic and capital infrastructure government and foundation grants and contracts, as well as work with program and finance teams to ensure grant compliance and timely preparation of invoices and reports to funders.
Reporting to the Chief Development Officer, this position is a senior member of the development team and will supervise a staff of two to three staff members.
Responsibilities
Lead the creation and execution of a comprehensive strategy and implementation plan for current, lapsed, and new institutional funders to meet and exceed fundraising goals.
Working across teams (Development, Strategy, Finance, etc) along with lobbyists and consultants, manage a pipeline of programmatic and capital infrastructure grants from foundations and governmental agencies such as, not not limited to the New York City Council, the Dormitory Authority of the State of New York, the National Endowment of the Humanities.
Maintain relationships with institutional funders including producing grant applications, programmatic and financial reports, presentations, invitations, and other correspondence associated with cultivating and soliciting funders, as well as leading the planning and execution of site visits, meetings, and events. Prepare briefing materials for Museum leadership for the cultivation and solicitation of funding sources.
In collaboration with Finance and Program staff, develop budget documents and solicitation materials, help negotiate and package grant agreements and contracts, oversee program and finance reporting to funders, and spearhead the submission of regular invoices within the prescribed time frame for each contract.
Streamline the application and administration process in close collaboration with the Director of Operations (Development); Budget Director/Controller (Finance); and appropriate programmatic staff.
Expand and diversify funding pipelines and work closely with other team members to secure funding for existing and new initiatives. Collaborate with other Development teams such as Individual Giving, Corporate Giving, and Operations to create and implement a unified solicitation strategy.
Directly supervise the work of the Assistant Director, Institutional Giving and other planned additions to the department. Use data and insights from donor management systems (currently Raisers’ Edge, Tessitura in spring 2024) to drive reporting and decision making across the portfolio and maintain accurate and up-to-date records of progress with funders.
With the Chief Development Officer, work with appropriate departments throughout the Museum to develop project materials for special Campaign and Capital projects, particularly the permanent collections reinstallation and private funding for capital infrastructure needs.
Qualifications And Requirements
Approximately 10 years of demonstrated experience and success cultivating, soliciting, and managing a portfolio of foundation and government grants and contracts, programmatic and capital; proven relationship management skills
Deep knowledge of institutional fundraising landscape and trends, especially within New York City and New York State
Ability to represent the organization to prospective and current funders
Outstanding written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills with the ability to work across teams
Demonstrated critical thinking, planning, and goal-setting skills
Proven track record of financial oversight and management of grant award funding
Proficient in data analysis and using data insights to drive action
Confirmed strength in project plan development, management, and execution; an ability to drive sophisticated, multifaceted projects forward to deliver results on time
Proficiency in Excel and in donor databases required
Excellent organizational and leadership skills
Strong communication and interpersonal abilities

Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in art history, arts administration, museum studies, English, or a related field; graduate degree preferred
- Three or more years of experience in grant writing, or a transferable skill set
- Excellent expository writing, research, and copyediting skills, and keen attention to detail
- Superior communication skills and ability to interact with funders and anticipate their needs
- Computer skills including familiarity with Microsoft Office and Raiser’s Edge
- Excellent time management, ability to meet deadlines, and flexibility to adjust workflow in relation to priorities
- Management skills, results orientation, and ability to work independently and collaboratively
