Job Title: Graduate Intern / Museum Assistant
Location: Darlington, MD
Hours / Compensation: Up to 20 hours per week at $17 per hour
Organization: Hosanna Community House, Inc. (HCH) is an award-winning non-profit
organization responsible for two Freedmen’s Bureau Schools built in 1867 that are listed on the National Register of Historic Places, Hosanna School Museum and McComas Institute, as well as associated collections. Our mission is to collect, preserve and interpret the history of Harford County, Maryland, through the lens of the African American experience within national contexts.
Role: The Museum Grad intern/Museum Assistant will be responsible for supporting
programs and other activities that advance the HCH mission and community engagement of both museums. The intern is under the direct supervision of the Associate Director and indirectly, the Executive Director, to gain professional experience.
Qualifications:
Applicants must possess the following experience and skills:
• Have a Bachelor’s degree in History, Sociology, Anthropology, Museum Studies
or similar disciplines, and a Graduate degree in progress
• Research and/or experience areas of focus must be in African American History or
Studies and culture
• Have strong interpersonal, written, and oral communication skills
• Have strong organizational skills
• Be proficient in the use of Microsoft Word and PowerPoint; and have basic
familiarity in the use of Excel. Some experience with Adobe Creative Suite or
Canva preferred.
• Be knowledgeable with the use of social media platforms (Facebook,
Instagram)
Duties:
Reporting directly to the Associate Director, Intern will perform the following duties:
• Maintain regular museum hours for the public. Greet and receive museum
visitors by phone, in person, or by e-mail; and conduct museum tours.
• Work alongside the Associate Director and Executive Director in the development and implementation of public programs, school programs, special projects or initiatives, and strategic partnership development
• Assist the Associate Director in the organizational planning and implementation of
HCH’s annual signature Upper Bay Juneteenth Festival
• Attend local, state, and national meetings as directed and appropriate to represent the museum, make professional connections, and gain added exposure to the industry
• Maintain organization files and other documents
• Assist with marketing and public relations campaigns
• Monitor and update website
• Assist with writing of grant proposals and quarterly and close-out reports for
grants funded
• Set up for museum events as necessary (chairs, tables, food)
• Assist with the maintenance of the facility and collections care, particularly before and after events
• Monitor supplies/inventory for programs, gift shop, and office
• Become knowledgeable of Harford County resources including area museums,
restaurants, and hotels
• Be available for some weekend programming and events
• Other duties as assigned
