POSITION SUMMARY

We are pleased to announce an all-new program at the Farnsworth Art Museum which is an exceptional opportunity for a candidate looking to embrace and advocate for change in the museum field. We have an opening for a fully-benefited Internship Manager who will be responsible for developing, planning, and implementing an inclusive, multi-week, residential summer internship program that offers experiential learning to a group of students of multidisciplinary and multicultural backgrounds as part of The Eddie C. Brown and C. Sylvia Brown Institute for Museum Studies. This newly created position at the Farnsworth will seek to advance opportunities for students underrepresented in the museum field and arts sectors to be our next aspiring museum leaders.

The primary duties of the Internship Coordinator will involve establishing and overseeing specialized internship opportunities in departments throughout the museum while allowing undergraduate students the exploration of art museum careers. Reporting to the Phyllis Wyeth Director of Learning and Engagement, this individual will act as the liaison between universities, interns, Farnsworth Art Museum employees, and other stakeholders while managing a summer program specifically for individuals entering their junior year of college. 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Responsible for identifying students’ career interests and developing ideas for individually tailored internship placements to match their skills and experience
  • Develop recruiting techniques and curricular systems for best practises in partnership w/university colleagues in the museum internship program
  • Develop and implement a recruiting/tracking system for internship placements; maintain records of employer/college/intern contacts and an environment of collegiality and partnership; establish and maintain benchmarks for program
  • Monitor intern progress, provide supervision, and plan and facilitate engaging seminars and workshops for academic and professional development
  • Focus on skill building, career exploration and general career readiness topics, preparing students to move from internship/education to full time post-graduation employment
  • Meet regularly with program staff and university partners for updates on students’ progress, goals and areas of interest for students and programmatic goals as a whole
  • Engage students and museum staff to support positive outcomes and growth for students and employees
  • Identify area midcoast and Maine community partners and other key constituents to foster an environment of support and academic well-being
  • Responsible for the day-to-day operations of the internship program from development and planning to implementation 
  • Ability to work independently and with others in a dynamic environment
  • Work cross-departmentally within the museum, particularly with Learning & Engagement and Advancement to support engagement with key stakeholders and donors
  • Ability to work evenings and weekends as needed for programmatic aspects of the internship program and to support public programs of the museum on occasion. 

 

Requirements

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor’s Degree required; 3-5 years of experience preferably in internship placement or a field related to academic program development and implementation, training, or leadership programs. Areas of background may include education, museums, or related fields.
  • Experience utilizing Microsoft Office Suite and Google office tools, Zoom, hybrid programs, cloud-based shared learning platforms
  • Demonstrated initiative and problem solving ability 
  • Experience working with students from multicultural backgrounds and/or underrepresented students
  • Ability to work effectively with diverse internal and external stakeholders 
  • Excellent communication skills both written, verbal and working across departments in the museum
  • Experience with juggling multiple priorities and exercising independent judgment
  • Ability to organize a multifaceted set of experiences for interns from a variety of academic and cultural backgrounds utilizing resources of the museum, academic and community resources
