The Museum of Jewish Heritage – A Living Memorial to the Holocaust seeks experienced museum educators with a passion for history to lead tours for students. We seek committed and engaging guides, beginning immediately. Educators will complete paid training sessions with Education staff that focus on the historical content of the exhibition, “The Holocaust: What Hate Can Do,” as well as artifact- and dialogue-based tour techniques. After successful completion of the training, educators must be available a minimum of eight hours per week over the course of two days to lead school tours. This is an on-call position offered on an as-needed basis; the number of assigned tours depends on the number of tours booked. Educators are expected to make a commitment at least eight days per month. Generally, the 90-minute tours take place between the hours of 10:00 AM – 2:00 PM, Mondays through Fridays. This position is for 10 weeks, concluding with the school year (June 2023), with the potential to renew in the fall.

Responsibilities

We are looking for experienced museum educators to guide school groups through our exhibition, “The Holocaust: What Hate Can Do,” accomplishing these basic tasks:

  • Mastering exhibition content, tour outline, and background material
  • While using a highly structured tour outline, staying attuned to the students in the group, listening carefully to their answers to your questions to learn how they are making sense of the material
  • Calling upon the history learned in training to provide students with information that is accurate, clear, concise, and age-appropriate
  • Following the tour outline, including time requirements, while fostering an inclusive experience that remains sensitive to the experiences of the students in your group
  • Staying aware of other groups in the galleries and recognizing that collegial relationships are important to accomplishing the goal of educating all student visitors
  • Maintaining timely and consistent communication with Museum staff, especially relating to tour confirmations, feedback, training, and documentation for payment

Requirements

  • Undergraduate degree in history, or education and experience in a related field
  • Museum education, tour leading or arts education experience
  • Knowledge of and/or strong interest in the history of the Holocaust
  • Individuals with K-12th grade Public School education experience will be given preference
  • Ability to learn and memorize tour outline, as well as the ability to tailor content in the galleries as needed
  • A welcoming, professional demeanor, collegial, and comfortable with flexibility
  • Good judgment and problem-solving skills when faced with unforeseen circumstances
  • Habits of consistent reliability and punctuality
  • Ability to be physically active for a minimum of two hours

Position Details

  • Reports to Associate Director of Education
  • Temporary, part-time at least 8 hours over two days a week for 10 weeks (through June 2024)
