(P/T, Contract) Archivist at the Venice Heritage Museum

Role description: The duties of the Archivist are to maintain the physical and digital collections, work with curators for exhibitions, and help oversee volunteers working with the materials.  

Currently, the Venice Heritage Museum holds over 4,000 images in its digital collections, 20,000 photographs and slides in its physical collections, and many other various ephemera and objects representing the extent of Venice, California’s existence. Our aim is to have access to all photographs, items, and ephemera digitally as well as physically, and to preserve these items with the highest quality archival standards.

The Archivist will scan, catalog metadata, and conserve all items in the growing collection.  As familiarity with our collections grows, the Archivist will also be able to help the curators in setting up exhibitions. The organization of our digital collections largely relies upon volunteers tagging images, thus the Archivist will lead the tagging project and steer the volunteers toward areas most in need of attention.

Term (Part-time): $5,000 for 1-year contract (October 2023-September 2024), est. 4 hours/week, with possibility to renew

After building a groundswell of support over the last few years thanks to the support of countless passionate community members, partner organizations and allies, and our devoted Board of Directors, we are now poised to launch this much-anticipated institution.

Opening in late 2023, the Venice Heritage Museum will be a space for discovery. In the face of constant change, VHM will be an inclusive hub to celebrate the diverse cultures and unique facets of Venice history. Venice’s accepting and progressive legacy will be on display, with exhibits highlighting both well-known and more obscure stories, showcasing their relevance in today’s world.

Ultimately, the Venice Heritage Museum will serve to enrich the lives of current and future generations through exhibitions, events, and educational activities, ​connecting the present with the past.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Utilizes scanners and computers to transfer analog media for long-term preservation, applying metadata as needed, and processes rendered files for use online
  • Creates original and edits existing descriptive, administrative, and technical data for digital collection assets according to organizational standards
  • Assists with overseeing archival volunteers, including training in appropriate archival standards, assignment of tasks, and monitoring of quality of execution
  • Liaises with Museum Manager and Board of Directors to supply information and access to content within the Venice Heritage Museum Archives
  • Performs other duties as assigned

KNOWLEDGE / SKILLS PREFERRED

  • 2+ years of archival experience, preferably within a museum or library institution
  • Experience working with image scanners and processing media files using software
  • Adept at and experienced with metadata management, including tagging and filing
  • Adept at technical manipulation of archival materials (print and physical) 
  • Clear communication skills, both verbal and written
