The Whitney seeks a temporary, part-time Exhibition Design Assistant to support senior designers in shaping the design and narrative of permanent and special exhibitions, which form the foundation of the Museum’s mission, identity and visitor experience.

Key responsibilities:

  • Assist senior staff with exhibition-making process by developing design studies, preparing art layouts, researching installation dimensions/specs/instructions and documenting model layouts and mockups.
  • Produce design renderings, maquettes, study models and other presentation materials to convey design and exhibition scope to Curators, Director, and various other Museum departments and outside parties.
  • Assist in producing architectural design documents from schematics through construction, including prototypes, millwork detailing and material specification.
  • Maintain digital collection archive and maquette library.
  • Maintain department supplies and model area.
  • Other duties, as assigned.

Position Requirements:

  • BA in Architecture or related design field.
  • 1-2 years’ experience in architecture or related design field
  • Advanced 2D drafting skills, preferably Vectorworks; advanced 3D modeling skills, preferably Rhino and V-Ray, and fluency in Adobe Suite.
  • Professional experience with millwork detailing, material specifications, and the production of Construction Documents preferred.
  • Facility with model-making, maquette and prototype production.
  • Familiarity with and interest in visual art, particularly modern and contemporary.
  • Excellent concern for details.
  • Good communication skills, both verbal and written.
  • Ability to work in a flexible, fast-paced environment on simultaneous projects.
  • Occasional light physical work.
  • Weekend, holiday, and overtime hours may be required during exhibition changeovers.
  • High tolerance for last-minute changes and extensive consensus-building.
  • This position is part time, working on site at the Museum.

Compensation:

  • This is a part-time temporary position (3 days/week for one year’s duration) with an hourly wage of $30-33.
