The Exhibition Operation Specialist oversees the technical aspects of the Garden’s exhibition and interpretive program. The Exhibition Operations Specialist performs basic maintenance of exhibitions and permanent displays and strategizes to ensure the best use of Garden resources for ongoing maintenance of exhibitions and smooth transitions between exhibitions. Under supervision of the Exhibitions Project Manager, the Exhibition Operations Specialist coordinates and oversees fieldwork of outside vendors including exhibition fabricators and installers, lighting and sound designers, and other exhibition project contractors. Additionally, this position supports, through actions and conduct, NYBG’s Inclusion, Diversity, Equity and Accessibility (IDEA) initiatives and helps to build and maintain an inclusive organization culture throughout the institution.
Specific Duties & Responsibilities:
- Supports maintenance and repair needs of exhibitions permanent and temporary displays.
- Maintains inventories of all exhibitions related fixtures including lighting, sound systems, signage, scenery, and props. Maintains on- and offsite storage spaces.
- Assists in the safe transportation and storage of exhibits and exhibition materials (or coordination thereof).
- Under supervision of Exhibition Project Manager, works towards established goals, prepares work orders, work site maps, and other planning documents, and documents installation processes and as built documentation of all projects.
- Oversees skilled work of an artistic and or technical nature in the preparation, care, storage, and restoration of museum exhibits for temporary and permanent exhibitions in gallery and outdoor settings.
- Acts as a liaison between exhibitions & programming and internal departments including horticulture, operations, custodial, and security and consultants/vendors/designers while assisting in planning and scheduling of on-site exhibition installation, de-installation, and maintenanceactivities.
- Assesses exhibits regularly and ensures the displays and signage in gardens and galleries are in good condition.
- Enforces facility safety standards, preventive maintenance programs, policies and procedures including the Garden’s procedures for outside contractors.
- Completes planning and research activities as assigned, including preliminary research on fabricators, products, and pricing.
- Other related work as required.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree preferred with experience in Event Management, Arts Administration, or related field
- 1-3 years of experience in a museum or nonprofit setting
- Knowledge of proper handling and storage procedures for a variety of media
- Strong organization and planning skills; detail oriented and communicative
- Strong mechanical skills and familiarity with power tools, lighting systems, and sound systems
- Proficient in Microsoft Office suite, including Excel
- Ability to multitask and utilize a variety of communication platforms for outreach to a wide assortment of internal and external stakeholders
- Demonstrated ability in planning and executing load in and load out for events or exhibitions
- Ability to read and interpret architectural plans is desired but not required
- Must have a valid driver’s license, be able to move 50 pounds, climb ladders, and use maintenance tools
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team during a variety of hours including occasional nights and weekends
Salary is commensurate with experience within the following range : $57,000-$63,000Benefits:
