Description

The Cataloging Registrar is a key collaborator in the object acquisition process and in the documentation, care, and digital exhibition of the collection. As part of a collaborative team of curators, collections managers, and cataloging staff, the Cataloging Registrar creates and improves collection knowledge of more than 750,000 objects documenting the archaeological past up to current events.

The primary responsibilities of this position are to process incoming donations and create object records in Argus (the WHS’s collections management database); update and improve object records; work with sites and partner organizations to collaborate on collection tracking; and participate with the digital initiative to create a Digital Asset Management System.

While this position will require mostly on-site work; a hybrid schedule with one work from home day may be possible after initial training. Additionally, this position may be asked to travel throughout the state of Wisconsin in order to work with partner organizations or at one of the Society’s historic sites.

Requirements

Minimally qualified candidate will have experience in all of the following:

  • Experience (or relevant coursework) in properly handling techniques for historic objects and archaeological materials.
  • Experience with the use of artifact collections management databases such as Argus, EMu, PastPerfect, or The Museum System (TMS).
  • Experience (or relevant coursework) in one of the following: accessioning, processing, or cataloging of incoming object donations.

In addition to minimum qualifications, a well-qualified candidate will additionally have experience in one of the following areas:

  • Experience with two or more of the following accessioning, processing, or cataloging of incoming object donations in a history museum setting.
  • Knowledge of museum collections management and registration standards and methods
  • Knowledge of data structures and data standards applicable to artifact collections information.
