Description
Summary: Responsible for developing a wide range of interpretive initiatives, resources and activities that enhance audience engagement with the Museum’s permanent collection, in-house and special exhibitions, in alignment with the Curatorial Department. Works with the Director of Education to establish the department’s direction and priorities based on the Museum’s strategic plan.
Responsibilities:
Programming
- Develops and implements gallery activities and interactives to connect to collection themes and special exhibitions in collaboration with the Youth and Family Programs Educator.
- Works with the Curator of Collections and Exhibitions on interpretative materials for the permanent collection galleries and special exhibitions.
- Researches and develops new directions in connecting with visitors including but not limited to audio guides, art making opportunities, digital and remote initiatives written guides for adults, guides for visually challenged adults and others.
- Working with the Director of Education, plans and coordinates implementation of creative aging initiatives such as the Meet Me at the Museum program for people with memory loss and their caregivers.
- Works with community partners on adult, college & youth opportunities for engagement with Rockwell collections and exhibitions.
- Works with Smithsonian Affiliates program and other partners to plan, coordinate and execute annual Lecture Series.
- Works with the Advancement Team to align public engagement initiatives across the organization.
- Assists the Director of Education in developing new school and adult tour initiatives.
- In collaboration with the Director of Education, develops quarterly art history workshops for volunteers to support the Museum’s collection.
General
- Supports and amplifies the Museum’s commitment to justice, equity, diversity and inclusion.
- Assists the Education Team with all Education Department activities as needed.
- Conducts tours of the Museum’s collection as needed.
- Conducts adult tour art activities as needed.
- Participates in regional and community initiatives as needed.

- Bachelor’s degree in art history or in museum studies with a minor in art history; Master’s degree preferred
- Minimum three years’ experience working in a museum setting and developing educational activities and programming.
- Excellent computer skills, including Word and Excel and the ability to learn new software programs as needed.
- Knowledge of the collection or ability to learn about it.
- Strong interpersonal skills; works effectively and professionally with people at all levels, including external stakeholders.
- Meets deadlines and can handle multiple projects simultaneously.
- Excellent presentation skills and proficiency in speaking in front of diverse groups.
- Excellent time management skills.
- Highly accurate, detail-oriented and organized; focuses on follow-up.
- Thinks creatively and identifies and resolves problems.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Some weekends and/or evenings required; flexibility in hours necessary.
