A Teaching Artist (bilingual) is sought for delivering in-person programs for individuals with dementia and their care partners at memory care centers, nursing homes, senior centers and other sites across New York City through June 2023. Teaching Artist will customize and carry out arts programming inspired by or connected to the Intrepid Museum’s history and collections. Programming will include multi-session “residencies” and one-off programs. Teaching artist will receive professional development in working with this audience, but some experience and/or familiarity with this audience is strongly preferred. Teaching artists with training and experience in visual art, music and/or movement are encouraged to apply. Hours are varied (primarily weekday), so a flexible schedule is a must.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and deliver both one-off and multi-session arts programs for individuals with dementia and their care partners at memory care centers, nursing homes, senior centers and other sites across New York City, with support of the Museum’s Access team;
  • Ensure that programming is inspired by or connected to the Intrepid Museum’s history or collections;
  • Document program participation and outputs;
  • Adapt program plans based on evaluation, reflection and participant feedback;
  • Participate in periodic professional development and brainstorming sessions offered by the Museum. (Kick-off department trainings are scheduled for September 20, 21, 26 and 27.)

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in art, education, art education, art therapy, museum studies or a related field (Master’s studies and/or teacher certification a plus);
  • Two years related experience and sensitivity working as a teaching artist with varied populations in an educational setting;
  • Understanding of arts education and informal education best practices;
  • Experience and/or interest in integrating history and the arts in programming;
  • Experience differentiating lessons to meet specific learning goals and needs;
  • Ability to travel to locations across New York City (car service available for locations not easily accessible by public transportation);
  • Familiarity or experience working with individuals with dementia and their care partners preferred;
  • Multilingual or bilingual (Spanish) required. Must be comfortable teaching in both English and Spanish.

Pay Rate: This position will receive $150 per hour for programs. Pay for HR onboarding, department trainings and meetings is $25 per hour. Program hours will vary.
