The Asian Art Museum seeks an innovative, ambitious, and creative Director of Digital Content to lead the development of digital interpretation, educational content/resources, and interactive engagement for the museum. We look to hire a thought-leader who believes in the impact of storytelling through digital interaction and can bring the collection to life across digital platforms.

This position will shape the digital interpretation and content vision, approach, strategy, and impact across the institution, bridging Asian art and culture with the visitors’ own lived and learned experiences. This senior-level position will lead the creation of the museum’s in-person and virtual digital experience development, utilizing best practices and creative strategies to author new approaches. This position will have the rare opportunity to build a program, strategy, and staff from the beginning, working collaboratively with Curatorial, Collections Management, Design, Communications and Marketing, Experience, and Learning and Engagement teams.

The Director will bring exceptional knowledge and innovative approaches to interpretation, in-gallery technology, and digital engagement. This role is responsible for leading a team that guides all phases of digital engagement including concept development, research, design, implementation, and evaluation. The Director must be able to collaborate with internal stakeholders including staff, board, and the leadership team, and communicate effectively with a wide range of content experts from curators to educators to contractors. This position will play a critical role in establishing the museum as a leader in digital engagement and visitor experience.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS 

  • Develops strategies and plans that advance the museum’s mission to integrate and embed Asian art and culture into inclusive interpretive frameworks.
  • Leads the production of digital media projects, helping to shape and define the
    experience of the museum visitor onsite and virtually, ensuring quality and brand
    consistency across all channels.
  • In collaboration with staff, facilitates the development of museum-wide strategies that center equity and inclusion for visitor-facing content and its presentation across the museum’s virtual and physical spaces.
  • Leads with vision and creates a strategy that pushes forward visitor engagement and revenue generation.
  • Builds and leads a diverse team of developers and creators to achieve their best work.
  • Works collaboratively with key internal stakeholders to establish goals, secure buy-in, and institutionalize approaches through effective communication, flexibility, and excellent project management.
  • Experiments with new approaches and work with partners to evaluate constantly evolving solutions; share results from research with peers in the museum and across the field.
  • Manages complex project schedules, prioritizing and delegating effectively.
  • Works effectively with a wide range of external stakeholders including community partners, artists, and advisors to grow audience, visitors, and partner engagement.
  • Designs, direct, and implement user testing and evaluation at key points in a project, integrating and sharing learnings.
  • Leads and implements a comprehensive and integrated digital strategy; maintains the quality control and accessibility of digital media files for the museum.
  • Plans and implements all website projects with a focus on the user experience and design; ensures site adheres to museum’s brand standards and is optimized to support the museum’s mission and e-commerce goals.
  • Defines digital KPIs and goals, regularly monitors against established metrics, and evaluates the success of all digital efforts; provides regular performance reports.
  • Ensures all digital engagement efforts are fully integrated with museum’s marketing and advertising program; ensures the Museum is leveraging analytics to optimize its efforts.
  • Participates in and/or lead cross-functional teams in support of museum’s goals.
  •  Supports employees by ensuring they embody the museum’s visitor promise and delivers expectations. Empowers employees to make visitor-centric decisions.
  • Acts as a trusted advisor and coach to managers and supervisors, helping to build empathy and cultural competence with the goal of improving leadership and management of a diverse workforce.
  • Performs other duties and projects as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited college or university, or equivalent experience, plus seven (7) years progressively responsible experience with two (2) years of supervisory experience; or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
  • Proven project management, budget, communication, collaborative, and organizational abilities.
  • Proven ability to work simultaneously on multiple projects in a complex, highly demanding, and fast paced work environment.
  • Demonstrated skill in media production workflow and digital asset management.
  • Experience and proven ability to build consensus and work effectively within a cross-departmental team.
  • Ability to respond to changing circumstances and priorities in a focused and timely manner; proactively address issues as they arise.
  • Creative problem solver with excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Advanced understanding of business strategies, human behavior, service, and quality improvement techniques.
  • Excellent interpersonal, and problem-solving skills, with the ability to coach, mentor, and inspire the leadership capacity of diverse colleagues.
  • Excellent leadership skills with the ability to set a vision and lead the team to deliver.
  • Ability to understand and explain the museum’ mission-driven strategic plan initiatives in terms that resonate with staff and visitors.
  •  Ability, dedication, discipline, and ambition to translate vision into concrete action.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective, positive working relationships with staff, volunteers, and members of the public; promote membership activities to ethnically and culturally diverse groups and communities.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment; adhere to deadlines; demonstrate flexibility in meeting shifting demands and priorities.
  • Must be able to work nights and weekends, as needed.

COMPENSATION

The Asian Art Museum is committed to practicing salary transparency. The minimum salary for this position is $140,000 and the maximum salary is $180,000. Please note that the pay range information is a general guideline only. Many factors are taken into consideration when setting starting pay including education, experience, the external labor market, and internal equity. This opportunity includes a generous benefits package, including but not limited to:
