Agora Project Fellow at the Museum Association of New York
About the Museum Association of New York
The Museum Association of New York (MANY) helps shape a better future for museums and museum professionals by uplifting best practices and building organizational capacity through advocacy, training, and networking opportunities. MANY serves over 1,400 museums across New York State including museum studies professors and students, libraries and archives, and museum industry partners. Founded in 1962, MANY is the only statewide museum service organization for New York with 760 member museums, historical societies, zoos, botanical gardens, and aquariums. The 25 members of the board of directors are divided between the ten economic development regions representing the expertise and skills of the diversity of those who call New York home. We produce in person networking and professional development programs in every region of the state and our annual conference attracts over 450 museum professionals. In the past three years over 5,000 people from 48 states and eight nations participated in virtual programs that keep our community connected and informed. We have three full-time staff whose work is assisted by contracted professionals and grant funded positions.

Project Overview
General Responsibilities:
Qualifications/Required experience:
“A New Agora for New York: Museums as Spaces for Democracy” is a humanities discussion program series that will use the Smithsonian Institution’s Museum on Main Street Exhibition Voices and Votes: Democracy in America as a launching point to support the work of twelve museums and their communities to explore, reflect on, and tell the story of their role in the evolution of American Democracy and envision the future of our nation as we approach the Semiquincentennial. The Voices and Votes exhibition will be installed for six weeks at twelve museums from March of 2024 through January of 2026. Programs will include two planning symposia for museum staff and scholars, the development and installation of an exhibition of materials from the museum’s collection that tells the story of their community’s relationship with democracy, a lecture by a project scholar, an oral history gathering project, a Community Conversation discussion program led by HNY staff, and a workshop for local teachers to help build their knowledge and leadership skills.
