JOB PURPOSE:           

The work of the Interpretation Division, part of the High Museum of Art’s Education Department, is to develop audience focused, accessible, and inclusive tools and materials for visitors and docents to use and create multiple pathways for understanding and experiences that balance exchange between the visitor, the art, and the High’s mission. Rooted in the museum’s guiding principles—growth, inclusivity, connectivity, collaboration—and educational methods, the Shannon Landing Amos Head of Museum Interpretation oversees the work of interpretation, the docent program, and various internships and fellowship programs.

The Head of Museum Interpretation facilitates communication between curatorial, exhibition, and education staff regarding interpretation and is in regular communication with colleagues across the field, sharing strategies and helping to position the High Museum of Art as a leader in visitor experience, content interpretation, and arts-based learning. The Head of Museum Interpretation reports to the Eleanor McDonald Storza Director of Education.

The minimum compensation is expected to be $75,000.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

Gallery Interpretation (60%):

  • Collaborates with curatorial, design, and exhibitions departments, and other key staff to conceptualize, develop, and implement interpretation program for the permanent collection and temporary exhibitions. Programs may include: gallery didactics, multi-media materials, videos, gallery guides, in-gallery educational activities and spaces, and tours for general public (audio and docent-guided).
  • Collaborates with Public Relations/Marketing to promote and market interpretive activities in the permanent collection, temporary exhibitions, and on social media.
  • Analyzes data from questionnaires, interviews, and group discussions to evaluate interpretive materials for the public (including adults, families, and children).

Docent Program Management (20%):

  • Provides training for and manages the docent program, working in collaboration with the school and teacher division.

Internship and Fellowship Management (10%):

  • Oversees the summer internship program and other fellowship programs, all of which are designed to provide mentorship and professional pipelines into the field.

Administrative oversight (10%):

  • Prepares and manages budget and determines allocation of funds for contract staff, supplies, and equipment.

Other duties as assigned.

Supervisory Responsibilities:

Directly supervises employees in the Museum Interpretation Division and contract staff, as relevant. Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization’s policies and applicable laws. Responsibilities include interviewing, hiring, and training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems.

Other Qualifications:

  • Expertise in critical thinking, able to conceptualize creative solutions for connecting broad audiences to our collection and exhibitions. 
  • Demonstrated success working collaboratively with cross-functional teams, particularly in institutional settings.
  • Experience teaching and facilitating conversations alongside works of art and developing materials to support this work.
  • Excellent writing skills.
  • Ability to identify and manage contract staff to develop content and facilitate training for docents and teaching artists.

Requirements

Education and/or Experience:

  • Master’s degree (M. A.) or equivalent in art history, education, or other relevant discipline and minimum five (5) years museum experience;
  • OR doctorate (Ph.D.) in art history, education, or other relevant discipline and minimum two (2) years museum experience;
  • OR ten (10) years related experience and/or training;
  • OR equivalent combination of education and experience.
