Description

The Museum Curator (Caterpillar Curator of African American Innovation and Entrepreneurship) provides expertise and intellectual leadership for the museum’s interpretation of African American innovation and entrepreneurship in science and technology.  

In this position, you will:

• Initiate and develop an intellectual framework and plans for collection and programming defining the museum’s approach to African American innovation and entrepreneurship in science and technology.

• Guided by the framework and plan, develop the museum’s collection in scope and scale.

• Conduct scholarly research which typically results in publications, digital materials, or exhibitions that make original and trust-worthy contribution to the field.

• Participate in conferences, symposia, programs for professional audiences and the public to share research, collections, and projects related to science and technology.

• Serve as expert in responses to public inquiries and media requests regarding topics relating to science and technology.

Requirements

Applicants must possess the following basic education requirements:

1. Degree in museum studies; or in an applicable subject-matter field such as American or African American history or the history of science; MA or Ph.D. preferred or

2. Combination of education and experience – courses equivalent to a major, as shown in 1 above, plus appropriate experience or additional education; or

3. Four years of experience that provided knowledge comparable to that normally acquired through the successful completion of the 4-year course of study as shown in 1 above.

 In addition to the basic qualification above and the basic education requirements:  

The ideal candidate should have demonstrated experience:  

• Working with museum collections and/or material culture, including but not limited to exhibitions.

• Conducting research focused on African American innovation and entrepreneurship in science and technology.

• Producing publications or other scholarly outputs that interpret African American innovation and entrepreneurship in science and technology.

• Presenting at professional meetings and/or conferences as well as participating in programs, other public activities, and responding to public inquiries.
