Overview:

Reporting to the Chief Operating Officer, the Director of IDEA will be responsible for leading the efforts to embed Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Accessibility into every aspect of the Museum’s operations and culture.  They will serve as a strategic thought partner in the creation of initiatives to advance diversity and inclusion for all members of the MFA staff community.

 The Director will develop and execute plans, programs, policies and initiatives that have measurable impact on museum wide IDEA priorities and values in order to develop an internal staff culture consistent with these priorities.   They will partner with and support the Senior Director of Community Engagement to expand community outreach, and ensure a welcoming and inclusive visitor experience. 

Essential Functions:

  • Oversee the creation and implementation of the MFA IDEA strategic plan.
  • Collaborate with departments and executive leadership across the Museum; including, but not limited to, the Director’s Office, Communications, Curatorial, Development, Learning and Community Engagement, Human Resources, Membership and Visitor Experience, etc.- to align practices and policies that build a sustainable internal culture that will support  the visitor experience and ensure that the Museum provides a workplace environment that is welcoming, supportive and inclusive for all staff and a visitor experience that reflects best practices in IDEA. 
  • They will plan and manage the implementation of inclusion, diversity, equity and access programs, seminars, workshops, and conferences for staff for the purpose of building and sustaining an inclusive Museum culture.  
  • Develop policy and communicate the value of IDEA to the Museum staff and Leadership Team
  • Work with the Board of Trustees to ensure and support their work toward IDEA values and principles.
  • Develop metrics for measuring individual department performance on IDEA key performance indicators; oversee metrics collection; evaluate results quarterly; and provide intervention recommendations.
  • Serve as a problem solver removing obstacles related to IDEA and facilitate pathways to solutions.
  • Educate, partner, consult, collaborate, and advise the museum on emerging IDEA best practices and opportunities to effectively build, incorporate and manage museum-wide IDEA.
  • Empower colleagues by establishing inclusive practices across the Museum that continually evaluate programs, communication, outreach and engagement with the goal of removing barriers to accessibility in order to ensure that the MFA is welcoming to everyone.
  • Represent the MFA at conferences and various professional organizations, including accepting invitations to participate in relevant and enriching discussions that expand the Museum’s IDEA’s awareness and efforts
  • Advise and support the Employee Resource Groups.
  • Perform other duties as directed or as responsibilities necessitate.

 

Requirements

Qualifications and Characteristics

  • Bachelor’s degree (Masters preferred) or relevant certification in IDEA 
  • 5-10 years of professional experience in facilitating IDEA programs in a large, complex institution 
  • Excellent interpersonal communication skills, engaging presentation style, and relationship management skills
  • Ability to collaborate with diverse racial, religious, cultural; linguistic, and LGBTQ Plus communities 
  • Proven ability to collaborate with colleagues across all levels of the institution. 
  • A genuine,  approachable and supportive style that elicits comfort and trust
  • Must be discreet in handling confidential and sensitive information
  • Sound judgment in knowing when to escalate a delicate situation by involving HR or legal counsel as necessary
  • Experience facilitating large group meetings on topics that are catalytic in nature
  • Proven project and program management skills
  • Demonstrated track record of motivating colleagues 
  • Proactive, creative, innovative approach to programming
  • High level of proficiency in Microsoft Office suite
  • An analytical and data-driven mindset to prioritize, set goals and track metrics related to the Museum’s IDEA  efforts 
  • Share gathered data and metrics with the Museum’s Leadership to determine future plans and priorities
  • Must stay abreast of latest IDEA trends, tools and teachings
  • An affinity for and interest in working with museums, the arts or non-profits
  • Experience working at a museum or cultural organization is a plus

Salary Range:

Full-time Salary, 35 hours per week
