Position Overview

The Senior Development Officer works closely with the New Museum’s Development team to support the Museum’s annual operating fundraising goal of $14M and its capital campaign goal of $108M. Responsibilities include prospect research, analysis, and strategy; preparation of cultivation and solicitation materials; proposal writing; benefit fulfillment and reports. This position supervises development staff in the assistant, associate, or manager or fellow level roles.

 

Primary Responsibilities, Senior Development Officer

  • Develop leads, create prospect portfolios and prospect strategy for high level giving across individual and institutional sources
  • Develop and action systems for moves management: tracking actions to support stewardship and cultivation; with the senior team, develop short- and long-term donor strategies
  • Create written materials to support grants and gift solicitation: proposal narratives; major gift letters; annual fund campaigns, capital campaign materials, among other written materials
  • Collect statistics and information across museum areas and prepare materials to support donor cultivation, grants, gifts, reports, and communications
  • Provide strategic and management support of corporate membership, sponsorships and strategic partnerships
  • Contribute to strategy on how to best present the New Museum to potential and current funders
  • Work across departments (Curatorial, Directors Office, Education and Public Engagement, New Inc) and with our affiliate Rhizome to cultivate, expand, secure, and steward institutional funder relationships
  • Assist in the preparation of budgets for proposals and reports, liaise with Finance
  • Facilitate donor communications and be a key steward to foundations, corporations, and government agencies, with oversight of institutional giving deadlines and communications
  • Complete institutional reporting, track and ensure fulfillment of institutional benefits
  • Supervise staff at the manager, associate, assistant or fellow level; supervise development internships

Qualifications

Advanced degree—MA / MFA or above—in Arts, Business, or Philanthropy. Candidates should have 5-7 years experience in fundraising for cultural institutions, possess outstanding expository writing skills, and have advanced experience with researching, strategizing, and securing donors in relation to time bound financial goals. Excellent communication skills, keen attention to detail, superior copy editing, high-level organization skills, strong follow-through, and ability to work independently is required. Excellent time management, ability to meet deadlines, and flexibility to adjust workflow in relation to priorities is essential. Candidates should have demonstrated success with fundraising, and experience interacting with donors and program officers. Proficiency with Microsoft Office and its associated applications, as well as Raiser’s Edge or equivalent database is required; proficiency with InDesign is a plus. An interest in contemporary art and knowledge of the New York arts funding community is highly preferred.
