The Museum of Modern Art is currently accepting applications for an Assistant Editor in the Publications Department. Reporting to the Editorial Director, the Assistant Editor, edits and oversees, in collaboration with the Senior Assistant Editor, the production of Museum-related ephemera such as exhibitions didactics, educational materials, etc.

Additional Responsibilities Include

  • Assists with the maintenance and enforcement of deadlines for all Museum-related ephemera.
  • Works with Learning and Engagement and other stakeholders in devising and enforcing best practices for exhibition didactics, with an emphasis on inclusivity.
  • Edits other material related to Museum programs when necessary, including Publications sales catalogs, and depending on experience, ability, and availability, exhibition catalogs, or other books.
  • Edits manuscripts and prepares ancillary texts (captions, cover copy, etc.) for production of other publication projects.
  • Assists editors with larger projects and checks all stages of projects in accordance with schedule through finished project when necessary.
  • Copy edits, proofreads, and assists in obtaining permissions on quotes or illustrative material for publication projects when necessary.
  • Performs any other duties reasonably related to the functions described above.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree and three or more years experience editing, copy editing, and proofreading for art publications.
  • Strong editorial skills and familiarity with production and design.
  • Knowledge of languages (especially Spanish), in addition to English, preferred.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office, Adobe Acrobat, Google Workspace applications, and other standard office software, procedures and equipment.
  • Thorough knowledge of style/usage materials, especially the Chicago Manual of Style (online or 17th edition).
  • Ability to work diplomatically and tactfully with a wide range of writers.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills to effectively manage collaborations with graphic designers, curators, and others.
  • Strong project management and organizational skills to keep complex projects on track.
  • Ability to work independently, manage time effectively, pursue several projects simultaneously, and meet deadlines.
  • Ability to quickly change course, when needed, for time-sensitive projects or as procedures change.
  • Ability to work for extended periods at a computer.

Salary: 

The salary for this position is $60,300 per annum
