Overview
Tufts Archival Research Center (TARC) is the archives and manuscript repository of Tufts University and is open to the public. TARC’s team of professional archivists provides stewardship for the Tufts University Archives, nearly three hundred manuscript collections, and other permanently valuable physical and digital archival materials. TARC staff also assist Tufts students, faculty, and staff with recordkeeping activities, through records management and digital library services. TARC’s stewardship responsibilities are mandated by the Board of Trustees, as outlined in the University Records Policy. TARC is a central University unit reporting to the Office of the Provost.
What You’ll Do
The Archivist and Project Manager participates in and manages TARC’s work related to the launch of a university-wide collaborative research project to examine the history of slavery, colonialism, and their legacies at Tufts. The Archivist and Project Manager supports several functions related to the project including communication and collaboration with faculty, post-doctoral fellows and undergraduate students, conducting research and responding to reference requests, creating progress reports and summaries of findings, and participating in physical and digital exhibit creation. The Archivist and Project Manager may also conduct archival processing for collections relevant to the project and assists with other departmental needs related to the project.
Essential Functions:
Project management and planning
- Manages archival aspects of the Slavery, Colonialism, and Their Legacies at Tufts University project including archival research, archival processing, and digitization aspects of the work
- Communicates and collaborates with faculty, post-doctoral fellows, and students in planning and execution of the project.
- Participates in meetings related to the project
- Creates project plans and report
Conduct research and contribute to engagement activities
- Conducts and completes original research related to the project in collaboration with TARC staff and project personnel
- Responds to specialized research requests from faculty, staff, and students involved with the project and from the University community as a whole
- Contributes to physical and digital exhibitions, public history projects and other research projects
- Creates progress reports and summaries of findings
- Assists with public events and other forms of public outreach
Perform archival processing and collections management activities
- Processes and describes archival collections
- Participates in collection assessment surveys and analysis
- Supervises students in routine aspects of archival processing work
Participate in other departmental activities
- Participates in general planning and policy development and other projects in the support of TARC strategic directions
- Participates in Tufts committees related to primary job assignment
What We’re Looking For
Basic Requirements:
- Knowledge and skills as typically acquired through completion of ALA-accredited MLS or equivalent experience with concentration in archives management
- Ability to plan, coordinate, and implement complex projects
- Demonstrated knowledge of archival theory and practice, including experience processing archival records and conducting archival research
- Knowledge of relevant standards for archival description including DACS, EAD and EAC-CPF.
- Excellent supervisory and organizational skills
- Ability to work both independently and collaboratively with a variety of staff in a rapidly changing environment
- Excellent written and oral communication skills
Preferred Qualifications:
- Background in African American History, Afro-Indigenous Studies, Public History, and/or the History of Universities
- Experience with family history and genealogical research
- Experience working with university records
- 1 -2 years of related experience
Pay Range
Minimum $56,600.00, Midpoint $70,800.00, Maximum $85,000.00
Salary is based on related experience, expertise, and internal equity; generally, new hires can expect pay between the minimum and midpoint of the range.
