Description

The Brooklyn Museum is seeking a passionate, trailblazing, and strategic Co-Director of Education, Youth Leadership and Lifelong Learning, to join our team. The ideal candidate has a track record of upholding our ethos of inclusion, diversity, and welcome. They will help us become a truly age-friendly Museum, expanding the reach and impact of our programs focused on youth leadership, emerging professionals, and continuing education for adults of all ages. The Co-Director will design and implement new programs that expand adult learning opportunities and increase our earned revenue potential. They will partner with Development to raise funds for all Education adult and teen programs, including academic tours, paid internships and fellowships, and scholarships for paid programs. 

The position will work with the Co-Director of Education, K–12 and Intergenerational Learning.

Responsibilities:

  • Serve as the Museum’s leader and expert in developing and implementing a wide range of diverse and innovative education programs
  • Reporting to the Deputy Director of Learning and Social Impact, be responsible for all programs focused on teens, academic audiences, emerging professionals, institutional partners, and adult audiences of all ages. Activities within this realm currently include: overseeing the Museum Education Fellowship program; a museum-wide Internship Program; Academic tours and partnerships; Adult Literacy programs; our volunteer A.R.T. Guides training and public tours; paid teen internships including InterseXtions, Teen Night Planning Committee, Museum Apprentice Program, and Creative Practice; Teen Nights and other teen-led programming; and partnerships with Senior Centers, Project Reset, NYC Health & Hospitals, as well as planning a full array of interpretive materials for special exhibitions, and permanent collection reinstallations.
  • Both Co-Directors represent the Museum in all matters involving educational initiatives; interact with senior management teams on development and strategic planning issues; work closely with staff across other departments; communicate with the Museum’s Director and Trustees on educational policy; and collaborate actively with colleagues within and outside of the Museum
  • Lead strategic visioning efforts for Adult Learning and Teen Programs, developing strategies for significant growth over the next 5 years
  • Coordinate with the Membership team, and other internal stakeholders, to design and grow our digital offerings for adult learners
  • Directly supervise the Senior Manager of Adult Learning, the Associate Manager of Adult Learning, the Associate Manager of Teen Programs, the Internship Coordinator, and the Teen Programs Coordinator, as well as share oversight of Education’s administrative staff
  • In alignment with the Museum’s DEIA efforts, play an important role in advancing universal access and supporting the Museum’s commitment to social justice and its ambition to be the most inclusive and visitor-centered art museum in New York
  • Both Co-Directors of Education participate and support the DEIA committee by helping to implement museum-wide initiatives that ensure compliance with the Museum’s Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Access (DEIA) plan
  • Serving as a senior manager, have key financial responsibilities in collaborating with our Institutional Giving team in Development to secure grants and scholarships and to track and report progress on deliverables
  • Serve as a key liaison for the Trustee Board’s Learning & Engagement committee and participate in other key committees and task forces to collaboratively address the institution’s strategic goals, financial health, and long-term sustainability

 

Requirements

Qualifications:

  • Advanced degree in art history, education, or related field, and sophisticated knowledge of art museums
  • Diplomatic and collaborative team player with proven leadership record, well-developed management skills, and excellent speaking and writing abilities
  • Ability to manage a budget of over $2MM
  • Experience supporting the development of grant proposals, narrative and fiscal reports, and other fundraising initiatives
  • Deep listening and consensus-building skills 
  • Passion for art, arts education, youth development, adult learning, community building, and social justice
  • Experience in and commitment to working with historically underrepresented audiences, such as ELL/immigrant communities, BIPOC communities, LGBTQ+ audiences, poor and working-class families, people with disabilities, and young people and to embracing the knowledge these constituents bring
  • Background or direct experience with youth organizing and/or youth development work in communities of color

Schedule: 35 hours per week, Monday through Friday, 9 am to 5 pm, with some late Thursday nights and weekends
