Editorial Summer Intern at Independent Curators International
Job Title: Editorial Summer Intern
Job Status: temporary
Location: New York, NY
Salary: $17/hr
Independent Curators International (ICI) supports the work of curators to help create stronger art communities through experimentation, collaboration, and international engagement. Curators are arts community leaders and organizers who champion artistic practice; build essential infrastructures and institutions; and generate public
engagement with art. Our collaborative programs connect curators across generations, and across social, political and cultural borders. They form an international framework for sharing knowledge and resources — promoting cultural exchange, access to art, and public awareness for the curator’s role.
The Editorial Summer Internship offers an opportunity to learn versatile editorial, website content production, and project management skills, and to build a portfolio for future production editorial careers. Working closely with the Communications and Digital Content Manager, the intern will collaborate on three major projects that
are central to ICI’s long-term digital communications goals, support ICI’s mission and grow its reach, and help build an authentic and sustainable organizational identity:
1. Help produce a comprehensive editorial style guide for the organization, including researching best practices for style and voice, determining grammar and style standards to be implemented in all communications, documenting and accounting for context-specific style and usage needs (such as exhibition didactics and digital content), and updating and maintaining an editorial word list
2. Implement style and usage recommendations across the ICI website by reviewing, editing, and updating text on the site, and make suggestions for new content to improve user experience and discovery about ICI’s programs and exhibitions
3. Assist in the production of an annual brochure, a publication process which is being significantly revamped for 2023 in order to focus more directly on generating innovative content Depending on time and interest, the intern may also synthesize and write copy for ICI’s exhibitions and programs for use on multiple digital channels, including the website, email campaigns, and social media. They will also be
responsible for project management of all related projects, including keeping calendars up to date, collating information for website updates or public-facing content, documenting procedures, and working with colleagues to receive missing information.
More generally, the Editorial Summer Intern will be actively involved in the ongoing development of a robust communications strategy in an innovative, expanding organization. No specific work experience is necessary, but strong writing skills are required, and some general computer skills (including familiarity with Google Workspace and the ability to learn how to use a website content
management system) will be needed. The following qualifications are also helpful:
Interest in communicating about contemporary art with a wide variety of audiences including curators, artists, arts organizations, galleries, and press
An interest in editing conventions and attention to detail when working with style, grammar, punctuation, usage, etc.; familiarity with the Chicago Manual of Style is a plus
Comfort with writing and editing public-facing materials, and openness to receive writing feedback, make revisions, and suggest changes to writing based on best practices
Familiarity with and willingness to learn specific software including website content management systems, Airtable, Google Workspace, and Mailchimp
Strong commitment to inclusive language, equitable and respectful discourse, and open dialogue about issues of social justice
Strong organizational skills and the ability to work both independently and in collaboration with a small team
Ability to communicate effectively within our team, with outside collaborators, and with the public
Salary and Hours: $17 per hour, 20-25 hours per week. Office hours are Monday–Friday, 10 am to 6 pm.
Applicants should be based in New York City by the start date and open to working a hybrid in-office and remote schedule.
