Description Summary:

Located in the heart of GW’s Foggy Bottom Campus, Washington, the George Washington University Museum and The Textile Museum fosters the study and appreciation of art, history, and culture; both within the university and throughout the global community. Through exhibitions, programs, and academic courses, the museum integrates with diverse disciplines to enrich research, education, and cultural understanding both across and beyond the university.Serving as a member of the senior administrative team of the Museum, the Museum Registrar supervises all aspects of registration activities pertaining to the permanent collections, loans, implementation of policies and procedures for acquisition, documentation, inventory, management, and disposition of the Museum’s permanent collection and other objects in the Museum’s custody. The Museum Registrar manages collections storage, in conjunction with the Conservation Department. The Museum Registrar also manages a team.

Primary Responsibilities Include

Strategic Planning & Collections Management:

  • Manages Collections and Conservation Resource Center at the GW Virginia Science & Technology Campus ( VSTC ), located in Ashburn, VA, in conjunction with Exhibition Production Manager and Chief Conservator.
  • Leads the Collections Management Task Force. Acts as liaison to Collections Committee of Board of Trustees.
  • Serves as a member of the senior administrative team of the Museum and participates in administrative planning, long range planning and budgeting, sits on the Exhibitions Task Force and Buildings and Grounds Task Force.
  • Prepares Collections Management department plans and reports within institutional framework.
  • Prepares long range plan, annual plan of work, annual operating budget, annual report statistics and lists, summaries of accomplishments for inclusion in Board reports.
  • Works with Faculty and Students to promote educational mission of George Washington University. Explores funding sources and develops grant proposals for department projects.
  • Develops and monitors department and grant project budgets.

Collections Management

  • Implements policies and procedures pertaining to the acquisition, documentation, management and disposition of the Museum’s permanent collections and other objects in the Museum’s custody.
  • Manages collections management database system. Oversees digitization of collection, both photography and scanning components. Oversees Rights and Reproductions program.
  • Supervises the movement, housing and safekeeping of collections and loan objects. Reviews transportation, insurance, storage and return arrangements on regular basis.
  • Oversees handling of public requests for access to collections. Negotiates contracts and arranges crating, transportation and insurance for outgoing and incoming loans

Exhibition Management

  • Negotiates and processes incoming loans for in-house exhibitions.
  • Negotiates contracts for incoming loan exhibitions and manages transport/delivery, packing/unpacking and processing of non-collection exhibition objects. Plans packing/shipping of Museum-originated traveling exhibitions. Forecasts aspects of exhibition budgets.

Performs other duties as assigned. The omission of specific duties does not preclude the supervisor from assigning additional responsibilities that are logically related to the position.

Minimum Qualifications

Qualified candidates will hold a Bachelor’s degree in an appropriate area of specialization plus 6 years of relevant professional experience, or, a Master’s degree or higher in a relevant area of study plus 4 years of relevant professional experience. Degree must be conferred by the start date of the position. Degree requirements may be substituted with an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.

Preferred Qualifications

Additional Required Licenses/Certifications/Posting Specific Minimum Qualifications:

  • MA in Museum Studies or related field preferred.
  • Experience in the field of Collections Management, included experience with long term department and museum planning, supervising staff, writing and managing budgets. Experience with loans, both international and domestic a plus.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of professional museum practices, including registration methods, safe object handling and art preservation, packing and shipping, storage of art, security measures, and object numbering techniques.
  • Knowledge of and demonstrated skill in collection management databases, Microsoft Word and Excel, and Adobe Photoshop.
  • Excellent interpersonal, organizational, and written and verbal communication skills.
