General Functions
The Orange County Regional History Center is seeking a highly qualified individual to fill the position of Assistant Curator of Education. The History Center is a national multi-award-winning, AAM accredited, and Smithsonian affiliated institution centered around its mission: to serve as the gateway for community engagement, education, and inspiration by preserving and sharing Central Florida’s continually unfolding story.
This position is responsible for educational program oversite including assisting in developing engaging educational content and programming for the institution, and for fostering interdepartmental and community collaborations.
Reports To: Curator of Education
Representative Duties /Assignments
- Responsible for project oversight of school services programs and educator professional development programs.
- Responsible for administrative coordination of school field trips and school outreach programs, including booking, handling contracts and invoices, receiving payments, maintaining the school program calendar, managing tour logistics, and scheduling actors.
- Provides non-supervisory leadership of Education Associate for School Services position.
- Conducts historical research for and facilitates public speaking engagements on relevant historical topics.
- Develops and facilitates training for education staff and volunteers in a wide variety of educational, historiographical, and museological practices such as methodology, resource use, developmental concepts, etc.
- Develops and facilitates educator professional development related to historiographical and educational best practices.
- With Curator of Education, establishes learning objectives for education programs; works with curator to ensure department goals and objectives are met; researches and maintains educational resources related to department goals and objectives.
- Assists Curator of Education with grant management for School Services grant projects.
- Coordinates with the Curator of Education to create, foster, and support interdepartmental initiatives and community collaborations.
- Assists in interviewing and recommending applicants for positions in the education department.
- Assists with recruitment, supervision, and training of education volunteers and interns.
- Assists with special events and public programming as required.
- Performs other duties as required.
Minimum Qualifications
History Center
- Graduation from an accredited four-year college or university with a bachelor’s or advanced degree in in history, public history, museum studies, museum education, education, or a closely related field and two (2) years applicable experience to include one (1) year supervisory experience. Or an equivalent of combined related education and work experience.
Preferences
- Graduation from an accredited college or university with a master’s degree in history, public history, museum studies, museum education, education, or a closely related field.
- Effective and exceptional written and verbal communication skills with both internal teams and external stakeholders and donors, as well as in public speaking.
- Possesses a strong working knowledge of museum best practices.
Additional Information:
The above description and qualifications are not all-inclusive and represents a majority of the key responsibilities of this position. Other duties may be assigned in the course of activities as required to fulfill the directives of the museum and strategic plan. Work environment is primarily in the museum with some outdoor activity. Some moderate lifting.
Hours Per Week: 40 Hours, exempt
Schedule: Generally, 8:00 am – 5:00 pm, Monday – Friday, evenings and weekends may be required for programming or special engagements.
