GALLERY GUIDES
The Brooklyn Museum is seeking individuals with a passion for visitor experience and a strong knowledge of art history to lead private gallery tours for adult groups on a freelance basis. Tour topics will include the Museum’s collections as well as upcoming special exhibitions, including Africa Fashion, Maria Magdalena Campos-Pons: Behold, and a soon-to-be-announced film exhibition.

Requirements
At least two years of professional museum or teaching experience and demonstrated ability to make specialized information accessible, accurate, and engaging for diverse audiences.
B.A. in art history, museum studies, fashion studies, or related field required. M.A.
desirable; current graduate students are welcome to apply.
A broad interest and strong background in art history and object-based discussion
A passion for engaging museum visitors around art and a warm, approachable demeanor
Strong independent research skills and familiarity with standard art historical research resources and methods
Background in African American/African Diaspora studies, ancient Egyptian art, or the arts of Asia is a plus
An active email account and knowledge of and comfort with Google Workspace
Reliability and clear communication about scheduling and attendance

Responsibilities:
Guides in this program lead private tours for adult groups on a range of topics.
Guides will be self-starters who are able to work independently in researching and
planning gallery tours. They also will be expected to work collegially with other Museum staff and communicate with the rest of their team as needed.
Guides will attend training sessions for new exhibitions and will have access to shared research materials.
Each guide’s tours will be evaluated by the Manager of Visitor Engagement and other
Museum staff before being presented to private groups. Each guide’s performance will
also be reviewed for content, teaching style, and customer service on a periodic basis.
This program will be evolving over the upcoming year as we experiment with new tour concepts and formats. Guides will be expected to show flexibility and a willingness to try new approaches.

Starting date: April 2023
Department: Visitor Experience
Salary: $100 per one-hour tour
Schedule: Guides will be notified of upcoming, available gallery tours and scheduled for specific tours through cooperation with Visitor Experience & Engagement staff. Tours may occur during Museum open hours (Wednesdays- Sundays, 11 am–6 pm) as well as day and evening times outside Museum open hours. Guides will also be expected to attend mandatory (paid) training sessions on a quarterly basis.
