Job Description

About the Role

With over 84,000 plants representing about 27,000 taxa, The Huntington is home to one of largest and most diverse collections of living plants in the world. Our biodiverse living collections provide an opportunity to interpret the wide variety of plant life for educational, conservation, research, and display purposes.The Huntington is seeking an intern for a 16-week work commitment. Botanical interns report to the Collections and Conservation Manager but work under the direct supervision of the Plant Records and GIS Mapping Specialist, performing duties that support staff in maintaining the plant records. May work a full-time or part-time schedule as preferred.

Essential Duties

  • Assist the Plant Records and GIS Mapping Specialist with maintaining plant records and producing labels and signage for the living collections.
  • Help manage inventorying and/or mapping the living collections under the guidance of the Plant Records and GIS Mapping Specialist.
  • May be asked to perform duties in other areas of the Huntington Botanical Gardens as needed.

Candidate Requirements And Experience

Knowledge, skills, and abilities:

  • Must be able to learn programs quickly and be able to focus on tasks for long periods of time.
  • Must be detail oriented.
  • Familiarity with Microsoft Excel and Microsoft Word preferred.
  • Must be able to work independently without constant supervision or be able to work in teams with volunteers or employees.

Experience

  • Some botanical knowledge required Familiarity with botanical nomenclature standards

Working Conditions

  • Working indoors on a computer for the majority of the day.
  • Occasional forays out to the gardens or greenhouses.
  • Must be able to stoop, bend, walk long distances, and lift moderate loads.
