Reporting to the Director of Institutional Partnerships, the Grants Officer, Foundation & Government develops, implements, and manages a portfolio of more than 40 foundation and government funders and prospects for annual operating and campaign solicitations, serving as a primary contact for these funders. The Grants Officer, Foundation & Government ensures the smooth processing of daily fundraising activities, including cultivation, solicitation, stewardship, high-level gift tracking, and gift renewals.

The Grants Officer, working under broad direction, applies independent judgment to complex tasks within specialized areas. The Grants Officer, Foundation & Government must demonstrate initiative and strong follow through; successfully handle multiple priorities; maintain perspective and focus while working under pressure; and develop and sustain effective working relationships with a wide variety of colleagues and donors.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Consulting with the Director of Institutional Partnerships and Senior Director of Development, identifies, cultivates, solicits support from foundation and government donors; serves as main contact for these relationships.
  • Manages the solicitation and stewardship process for a portfolio of institutional gifts, including research on prospective funders and potential cultivation opportunities; external meetings with funders and prospects; and timely correspondence, submission of proposals, sponsorship presentation packages, and reports. Maintains regular contact with the portfolio of funders.
  • Develop and implement a plan to expand the reach of the museum in qualifying, pursuing, and successfully securing significant grant support for major exhibitions and programs from national and internationally prominent foundation and government entities, such as NEA, NEH, IMLS. Prepares written proposals supported with sound research data, as well as develops corollary presentation materials.
  • Makes appointments for Museum Director with foundation officers and other prospects; arranges for onsite tours for supporters (foundation officers, foundation trustees).
  • Manages all compliance, reporting, request of funds. Working closely with finance, curatorial, education and museum services teams, monitors grant award compliance to ensure that funding is expended in accordance with foundation and government agency requirements. Prepares and submits grant reports as required by the funding entity.
  • Conceives funding strategies for exhibitions, programs, general operations, and other projects; works closely with internal departments, including curatorial, education, and marketing staff, to develop proposals. Maintains current and accurate knowledge of museum projects, statistics, and program impact.
  • Prospect research: Create and maintain active pipeline of new prospects, oversees production and refresh of solicitation and stewardship materials; coordinates benefits fulfillment and donor recognition. Familiarity with grant databases and research tools.

OTHER FUNCTIONS

  • Provides support on other Institutional Partnerships and Development Department projects as needed, including stewardship and partnership benefits fulfillment.
  • Performs other related duties as required. Must remain flexible and adaptable to overall team priorities.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited college or university
  • Five (5) years of increasingly responsible experience in fundraising, with an emphasis on foundation and government giving and grants writing and administration; or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience
  • Knowledge of fundraising principles, techniques, and ethics, including the techniques and practices of garnering foundation and government support; understanding of nonprofit environment
  • Proven ability to personally solicit institutional donors for grants; sustain and grow relationships with partners
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills; ability to write persuasively, clearly, and concisely, and to blend information from multiple sources into a single, effective fundraising document
  • Demonstrated ability to organize workload, manage several projects of equal priority at once, and sustain productivity and accuracy in a deadline-driven environment
  • High-level administrative skills; good research, planning, analytical, problem-solving, organizational skills; strong follow-through
  • Strong interpersonal skills; good judgment, initiative, and resourcefulness; sense of humor
  • Ability to interact effectively with board, volunteers, donors, and museum staff at all levels; to work independently in a fast-paced, results-oriented environment; flexibility in meeting shifting demands and priorities
  • Must maintain confidentiality within the museum setting and in regard to information obtained in respect to prospects and donors
  • Proficiency in MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint; knowledge of Raiser’s Edge fundraising desirable.
  • Availability to work nights and weekends as needed for events or deadlines
  • Demonstrated understanding and affinity for Asian Art Museum’s mission; appreciation of Asian art and culture preferred

WORKING CONDITIONS

Normal office environment. Involves some evening and weekend hours, may require occasional travel.

Compensation: The Asian Art Museum is committed to practicing salary transparency. The minimum salary for this position is $65,000 and the maximum is $84,000. Salary is competitive and commensurate with experience. This opportunity includes a generous benefits package.
