POSITION OVERVIEW:

The Education Specialist works with 9/11 Memorial & Museum Education staff to deliver high-quality programming for school, youth, and family audiences. This position delivers age-appropriate education programs for school and educator groups visiting the Museum and virtually through our Virtual School Programs. Intensive initial training will be provided by Memorial Museum staff.

As programming evolves, this position will deliver age-appropriate school tours, teacher professional development sessions, and programs for intergenerational audiences visiting the Museum. In addition, this position will support education staff on other relevant programming.

The Education Specialist will report to one of two Assistant Managers within the Education Programs team. Education Programs and may require the flexibility to work evenings and occasional weekends.

 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

· Lead, film, and facilitate virtual school programs for school and educator groups.

· Lead tours for school, educator, and intergenerational groups visiting the Museum.

· Contact teachers in advance of field trips to assess specific requests and confirm registrations.

· Set up and break down tour equipment while promptly reporting any technical issues.

· Deliver daily tours and student workshops for school groups visiting the Museum.

· Assist with additional special projects related to educational programming.

· Collaborate with the Education Programs staff to effectively assess these programs.

· Facilitate family programs for intergenerational audiences as needed.

· Support the development and facilitation of professional development workshops as needed.

· Continually study the Museum’s collections, exhibitions, and content to ensure a thorough understanding of our institution, the World Trade Center, and the history surrounding 9/11.

· Ensure that all content delivered to Museum visitors is accurate.

· Make other presentations on behalf of the Museum, including at external conferences.

· Provide public tours, as needed.

· Other duties as assigned.

REQUIRED SUPPORT FOR ORGANIZATIONAL EVENTS

• Participate in the Annual 5K Fundraiser and September 11th Commemoration.

• Assist with other special projects and events in support of the 9/11 Memorial & Museum mission, as assigned

 

QUALIFICATIONS/SKILL REQUIREMENTS:

· College degree required.

· At least three years’ experience coordinating or teaching museum education programs.

· Knowledge of and experience with museum education concepts, pedagogy, and best practices.

· Basic familiarity with 9/11 history desirable, but not required.

· Highly organized, able to organize details and schedules.

· Self-starter, takes initiative, works well independently.

· Excellent communication skills, including telephone, interpersonal, and written skills.

· Able to interact professionally and appropriately with staff, volunteers, and the public.

· Command of a second language preferred.

· Able to work evenings as needed.

· Working knowledge of Microsoft Office, Adobe Acrobat, Outlook calendaring, Zoom, and relevant database software preferred.

· Ability to accept guidance, direction, and supervision; able to give feedback and share ideas appropriately and professionally.

· Must adhere to a policy of strict confidentiality in terms of information regarding 9/11 victims, bid documents, security and life safety incidents, and labor relations.

The work environment is an indoor, climate-controlled office environment comprised of cubicles, walled-offices and group conference rooms. The noise level in the office environment is usually low. There are no protective devices necessary to be worn or utilized in the office work environment. Minimal travel is required.
