Smack Mellon is a small and ambitious nonprofit art organization that supports the work of emerging, under-recognized mid-career, and women artists through our residency, exhibition, and education programs. Smack Mellon seeks a part-time Events Coordinator to support our spring season events, primarily focused on our Annual Spring Benefit, which will be held in early May 2023. This position will work closely alongside Smack Mellon’s current staff members to assist with the organization and production of all public programming and events. The position requires excellent writing, organizational, and communication skills and a high level of attention to detail. Must be extremely resourceful, creative, and capable of working with minimal supervision. The ideal candidate will be passionate about supporting the arts through work at a nonprofit organization and be familiar with contemporary visual arts.
This position is part-time temporary, February 1 through May 2023, requiring two days of in-person work per week at Smack Mellon’s space in Dumbo, Brooklyn. Candidates must be able to work Sundays during gallery hours, and occasional evenings and weekends for events. Without exception, candidates must be available to work on the following dates: April 22-23, 2023 and May 6, 2023.
Responsibilities
Annual Benefit:
- Correspondence with over 200 artists to coordinate the logistics around artwork donations including gathering artwork information, and scheduling artwork drop-off.
- Physical organization of benefit artworks on site
- General admin related to organizing all aspects of benefit related information
- With the help of staff, securing in-kind donations
- Communicating between staff and outside vendors
- Updating Smack Mellon’s website with details of benefit artwork information.
- Volunteer coordination with 50+ volunteers
- Creating a Benefit program using an InDesign template and coordinate with the printer to produce
- Photographing and organizing information related to the artist-made gravity racer cars
- Additional tasks may be assigned
Events:
- Reporting to Programs Manager and Director of Exhibitions, assistance with all aspects of public events including: set up, basic photography, and coordination between participants
- On-site support for rental events, such as weddings and corporate events
Qualifications
- Minimum bachelor’s degree or equivalent relevant experience
- Previous experience with general administrative work (at a nonprofit a plus)
- Familiarity with WordPress, Google Drive, Square, Eventbrite, and Adobe programs (InDesign a must)
- Basic design and layout skills
- Must be able to work in-person, lift ~40 lbs, and climb stairs.
- Excellent writing and communication skills
