Job Description 

The Director of Living Collections and Curator of Herbaceous Collections is a senior leadership position in the Horticulture division of The New York Botanical Garden. The Director is responsible for establishing and maintaining the highest standards of excellence in the design, development, and curation of the outdoor gardens, seasonal displays, and the herbaceous plant collections directly and through supervision of the Curator of the Rock Garden and Native Plant Garden. The Director oversees the management, analysis, and presentation of plant records data and other information related to the extant and historic living collections of the New York Botanical Garden through the development and implementation of best practices for plant records and plant mapping and supervision of the Senior Plant Recorder and Associate Curator. The Director serves a primary spokesperson for NYBG’s living collections.

Salary: Commensurate with experience within the following range $95,000 -$105,000.

 
Duties & Responsibilities 

Specific Duties & Responsibilities

Curatorial:
• In collaboration with the outside consultants and Horticulture staff, leads the creation of seasonal planting design for beds, borders, and containers at various locations across
the landscape.
• Leads the preparation of planting plans, identification of sources, procurement of new plants, annual evaluations for confirmed collections work in gardens and collections
across the landscape.
• Leads the development of collections policies for and evaluates the outdoor gardens and collections and the herbaceous plant collections.
• Makes recommendations for the development and location of new and renewed
collections and plantings of herbaceous plants.
• Collaborates closely with the Associate Director of Outdoor Gardens and Sustainable
Horticulture and Associate Vice President of Horticulture Operations to execute
required work.
• Advises the Director of Plant Health to coordinate best insect and disease control in the outdoor gardens and seasonal displays.

Oversight of Plant Records:
• Oversees, through BG-Base and other software, the creation, management, analysis,
and presentation of living collections information including
accessioning, de-accessioning, updating determinations and nomenclature, and tracking phenology data.
• Through ArcGIS and other software, oversees the development and maintenance of
electronic maps of collections, displays, gardens, and landscapes.
• Assembles information from various sources about the history, development, and
current status of the living collections and shares this information through published
reports, presentations, and other means.
• Maintains highest standards in accurate and up-to-date plant identification verifications and taxonomy.
• Oversees the coordination of all plant labeling, including the production and installation of accession and display labels for the permanent collections and display labels for
exhibitions, and seasonal displays.
• Maintains current inventories and historic records required to document the collections.

Supervisory:
• Directly supervises the Associate Curator, Senior Plant Recorder, and Curator of the
Rock Garden and Native Plant Garden and supports them in their daily work.
• Facilitates communication between curators, managers, and external collaborators.
• Performs required supervisory administrative tasks.

Institutional:
• Works closely with staff in all divisions of The New York Botanical Garden to respond to inquiries about the living collections and to provide accurate information about the
living collections to scientists, visitors, media, students, and other stakeholders.
• Supports efforts to make accurate information about the living collections available to the public through signage and interpretation, various digital platforms, and other
media.
• Participates in and supports institutional events.
• Participates in divisional and institutional planning and policy making.
• Represents the Horticulture Division in the media, at institutional events, and in
professional associations.
• Represents the Garden in external relations, joins horticulture societies, gives lectures and presentations.
• Other work as required.

 

Education and Experience 
 

Qualifications
• Broad knowledge of bulbs, annuals, biennials, perennials suitable to New York’s climate and soils
• Demonstrated experience creating innovate designs for horticultural displays
• Some experience working with or managing a collections database, familiarity with BG-Base or similar plant records database preferred
• Strong knowledge of plant identification, plant nomenclature, and taxonomy
• Familiarity with the botanical and horticulture literature specifically related to plant
nomenclature
• Experience with electronic mapping and surveying systems such as BG-Map, ArcGIS,
OPS, AutoCAD, or similar systems
• Excellent supervisory skills
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills
• A team player and strategic thinker with solid organizational skills
• A Bachelor’s degree in Horticulture, Plant Science, or a related field preferred
• A driver’s license valid in New York State at the time of hire, or able to obtain one
within six months
