Western States Internship to support Mount Vernon Teacher Programs at Washington’s Mount Vernon

Background
The Education and Guest Services Division provides meaningful learning opportunities for Mount Vernon’s one million annual onsite visitors and students in classrooms around the country. Through a diverse portfolio of interpretive experiences, engaging programs, and online resources, we expand each learner’s understanding of, and appreciation for, George Washington and the revolutionary world in which he lived.

Mount Vernon will be developing teaching resources and hosting a series of teacher workshops in five northwestern states (Idaho, Washington, Oregon, Montana, and Alaska) to connect our institution’s mission effectively with students and educators there. 

Intern must reside in one of the 5 states (Idaho, Washington, Oregon, Montana or Alaska) in the initiative. 

Position-Specific Responsibilities (prioritized based on the interests of the applicant):

  • Review and select education resources from Mount Vernon and partner organizations to highlight at the PD training sessions.
  • Create a rubric to assess the value of Mount Vernon’s resources for the needs of students in northwestern states
  • Create promotional materials for Professional Development sessions
  • Attend to support one or more regional workshops
  • Prepare one professional development activity to present to teachers at a digital or onsite session
  • Attend project-related meetings with Mount Vernon staff

Requirements

Qualifications and Requirements:
•    Interest and/or experience in education, public history, American studies, Indigenous studies, Leadership studies, museum studies, museum education, history, or another related field. 
•    Candidates in pursuit of or recently completed either a bachelor’s or Master’s degree will be considered
•    Demonstrated success contributing to team-based projects
•    Ability to socially engage with teachers during professional development sessions

Special Requirements:
•    Internship runs between January and May 2023 and culminates in the Alaska Teachers workshop in Anchorage.  Internship can be either part-time or full-time. •    The successful candidate will be able to work remotely for this internship and meet regularly via video conference platform. 
•    One round-trip to Mount Vernon is included in internship acceptance and may be used to conduct a portion of this internship onsite, where an office set-up will be provided at Mount Vernon during that time. Housing will not be provided for onsite internship.  
•    The pay rate of $11 demands that this internship is a mutually beneficial experience and advances the intern’s education and professional career.

The Education and Guest Services team is composed of the Interpretation, Historic Trades, Guest Services, and Learning Departments. In sum total this group is comprised of more than 150 full- and part-time staff members who connect Mount Vernon’s mission to a variety of audiences using onsite and offsite programming and physical and digital projects.
