Salary: $40,000.00 – $45,000.00


The Position

The Adler Planetarium is seeking a Collections Specialist to join our dynamic team located on Chicago’s Museum Campus. This position is responsible for assisting with access to, the care of, and record keeping of the Adler Planetarium’s important collection that explores the history of astronomy and the enduring human connection with the sky. The collections include historic scientific instruments, rare books, and works on paper. This person will assist with the development of initiatives using Adler Planetarium collections and digital assets, including databases and material accessible to the public through digital channels.

This individual will also be responsible for:

    • Assisting with the day-to-day care for the Adler’s collection and managing environmental conditions.
    • Creating and maintaining records in the collections database.
    • Providing digital registration services. 
    • Assisting with all incoming and outgoing loan registration and logistics.
    • Contributing to digital access and collections outreach.
  • Assisting access to Adler collections for study, exhibition, and research. 
  • Working with the Collections Manager to implement and uphold policies and procedures.

Requirements

Required Qualifications:

  • At least 7 years professional work experience in museum collections, conservation, or a related field OR Bachelor’s Degree in Museum Studies, History, Art History, Information Systems, Library Science or a related field and at least three years of experience in museum collections.
  • Demonstrated ability to organize data and work with museum collections databases. 
  • Experience in digital curation/digital stewardship
  • Proficiency in the use of museum collections databases

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Museum Studies, History, Art History, Information Systems, Library Science or a related field and at least 5 years of experience in museum collections, museum registration, conservation, and/or digital collections. 
  • Advanced degree in Museum Studies or a related field is acceptable in lieu of years of experience. 
  • Experience developing procedures and standards for digital material and digitization of collections.
  • Advanced proficiency in museum collections databases and digital content management systems.
