Description
The Museum of the Shenandoah Valley (MSV) has an exciting opportunity for an Adult Programs Manager. Reporting to the Director of Education, the Adult Programs Manager will collaborate with MSV colleagues to initiate, develop, plan, implement, and evaluate programs for an adult audience that serve the range of interests of the Museum’s community and advance the Museum’s mission and strategic plan goals. The Adult Programs Manager will have significant contact with the public, conduct research pursuant to programs as needed, work as part of departmental and divisional teams, and explore new programming initiatives. Current adult programs include, but are not limited to, workshops, lectures, tours, presentations, classes, garden programs, and exhibition interactives.
Duties & responsibilities include the following:
- Collaborate with the Director of Education and the Youth & Family Programs Manager to establish the annual education programming plan
- Plan, coordinate, and administer programming for adult audiences ages 18 and older to include public lectures, workshops, outdoor programs, and content for guided tours to coincide with the museum’s mission
- Collaborate with the Director of Education to develop and oversee production of interpretive materials and projects
- Conduct research on museum objects, historic site, and Shenandoah Valley topics as appropriate for Education Department projects, tours, and other projects
- Advance the museum’s DEAI reach by planning a variety of inclusive and accessible onsite and virtual programs
- Teach diverse audiences in the museum setting
- Assist with youth programs and student tours as needed
- Evaluate new interpretive content for the museum galleries and site (including panels, labels, and signage) from an education standpoint as materials and projects require
- Plan and develop, in collaboration with other Education Department members, hands-on interactives for exhibitions and programs
- Develop and maintain a system for evaluating adult programs, and compile attendance numbers
- Coordinate promotion with PR/marketing staff, including social media
- Develop and manage program budgets
- Coordinate with other departments (marketing, security, special events, visitor services, etc.) to ensure public programs are marketed, staffed, and that facilities are open and prepared
- Negotiate contracts with presenters and contract staff
- Identify speakers and presenters for programs appropriate to the museum’s mission
- Manage program logistics, taking registrations and payments as needed
- Assist with, and occasionally lead, docent training programs
- Actively engage in regional and national professional exchange through attending conferences, professional memberships, and continued education
- Coordinate adult group tours, fielding inquiries, taking reservations, and planning onsite activities
The ideal candidate will have the following qualifications:
- Master’s Degree from an accredited college or university strongly preferred in museum studies, history, education, public history, non-profit management or related equivalent experience
- Three or more years experience developing and implementing programs in a museum or similar non-profit institution
- Experience developing and implementing virtual programs
- Availability to work some evening and weekend hours to accommodate programming
- Knowledge of Shenandoah Valley history, culture, and decorative arts a plus
