GENERAL STATEMENT OF RESPONSIBILITIES & DUTIES:
The Museum seeks an inspiring and experienced Educator responsible for strategic planning, conceptualization, development, and implementation of Creative Practice and Community Engagement initiatives within the Museum and with collaborating communities. This person will be a key liaison between the public, artists and The Met’s curators and scholars.
The Managing Educator, Community Engagement and Practice will design, implement, and evaluate programs for new and existing adult and intergenerational audiences. Through collaboration with artists, community members, scholars, curators and practitioners, the Managing Educator designs and implements relevant programs responsive to our contemporary world and finds ways to promote public engagement with scholarship and research. The Managing Educator is responsible for supporting artists, curators and communities in expanding narratives and engaging new audiences with The Mets collection, new exhibitions, projects etc. This position and support staff is a key partner and collaborator in the creation, design and implementation of festivals
The Managing Educator, Community Engagement and Practice works with a dynamic group of colleagues across the Museum and reports to the Educator in Charge.
This is a permanent, full-time position. Local travel is required. Some early morning, evening and weekend hours required.
PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES & DUTIES:
Build and Maintain Relationships
- Establish relationships with artists, partner organizations, and speakers for multi-disciplinary studio workshops rooted in dynamic collaboration and innovative approaches across the arts.
- Develop and maintain relationships with The Mets CCS departments, particularly on the creation and execution of innovative scholarship- and exhibition-based programs that advance public understanding of the collection and utilizes the creative practice framework for engaging with artists, artistic practices, scholars to offer inclusive perspectives
Program Design, Development and Support
- Develop and implement a strategic vision to maintain and grow opportunities for audiences to engage with creative practices through artist and scholar led programs and lead evaluation efforts with audiences and program participants to shape future programs for success.
- Develop and implement high impact, revenue generating programs at a range of levels of engagement to support new narratives around museum collections and studio art-making courses focused on a wide variety of adult learners, both in-person and virtual
- Design curricula for adults with guest artists and a variety of practices around the collection and special exhibitions incorporating key elements of art historical context and technical art-making skills among other disciplines, as needed.
- Create, develop, and oversee new and innovative multigenerational art-making opportunities as a part of the Museum’s engagement with adult audiences, including older adults
- Contribute and collaborate on internal and external projects related to community engagement and audience development to include large-scale museum festivals.
- In conjunction with the Education and Marketing and Communications departments, build and expand on the dedicated community of adult art-makers engaged with The Museum.
- Establish efficient processes and systems for creative practice program development and logistics.
- Oversee all logistics regarding implementation of programs
Administration
- Manage two Assistant/Associate Educators (Community Engagement; Community Practice) and one Program Associate/Coordinator and develop a collaborative team to accomplish goals in the area of Creative Practice at The Museum.
- In collaboration with the Chair/Educator in Charge, work with the development department to cultivate funding opportunities for creative and scholar/artist led programs at The Met.
- Develop the area’s annual budget, analyzing and making recommendations for fee-based programs and revenue targets, and working closely with the Development Department to secure program support.
- Oversee budget, revenue goals and coordinate funding needs and reports for the Creative Practice Program area

REQUIREMENTS & QUALIFICATIONS:

Experience and Skills:
- Minimum 5-7 years of experience working in museum education, required.
- Demonstrated leadership in supervising and mentoring staff.
- Evidence of collaborative leadership skills to lead teams through complex projects.
- Excellent interpersonal skills and demonstrated capacity to effectively and professionally communicate with a wide range of constituencies, verbally and in writing
- Excellent organizational skills, follow-through, problem-solving skills, and ability to develop effective program structures and work processes; ability to manage multiple projects.
- Demonstrated experience and commitment to working with individuals from a wide range of social, economic, cultural and educational backgrounds; track record of expanding and diversifying participation and audience levels in educational offerings.
- Demonstrated teaching excellence with original works of art in a museum or gallery setting to a variety of audiences.
Knowledge and Education:
- Masters degree in art, art history, museum education or related field, required.
- Demonstrated knowledge of current theories, practices, and programming pertaining to human development, multi-modal learning, and informal youth and family learning within a museum setting.
- Demonstrated knowledge in current evaluation and audience research methods.
- Command of Microsoft Office Suite and ease with a variety of digital technologies
