The United States Holocaust Memorial Museum is a federally chartered, nonpartisan institution that was created by the US Congress to serve as America’s national memorial to the victims of the Holocaust and an educational institution dedicated to the history and lessons of the Holocaust. Information about the Office/Division:

The Digital Access Division is responsible for managing a growing collection of digital historical collections comprising oral history, film, sound, photos, objects, archival documents, and metadata. Its mandate includes ensuring the millions of digital assets in the Museum’s collection are made accessible to all users, whether remote, local, or staff, and preserving them for future generations. This work includes collaborating with staff across the Rubenstein National Institute for Holocaust Documentation to digitize the collection, receive digital acquisitions, and integrate metadata from various databases, and to create the best user experience possible in its online Collections Search. The Division works closely with partners across the Museum to develop and implement the access, management and preservation system architecture that will secure our collections long into the future.

This position will be a part of the Digital Resources and Coordination Branch of the Digital Access Division. The goal for the role is to be immersed in the tools, theory, and practice of digitization and digital asset management and preservation.

Major Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Become familiar with the Museum’s digital assessment management and preservation systems
    • Intern will be given an overview of the digital asset management and preservation systems at USHMM
    • Intern will be trained on the ingestion and organization of digital assets
  • Introduction to tools and concepts related to digitizing, preserving, and making accessible personal paper archival collections
    • Intern will be introduced to the workflow of the Archival Paper Digitization Program
    • Intern will be introduced to the imaging process for personal paper collections
    • Intern will be provided with additional resources to further their own learning
  • Perform quality control on approximately 350-400 images per week produced through the Archival Paper Digitization Program
    • Intern will be trained on performing quality control on digital images with physical reconciliation
    • Intern will be training on object handling
    • Intern will review the quality of the digital images, crop, deskew, assess for reshoots, and physical reconcile. 

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Currently pursuing an advanced degree in one of the following fields
    • Library and Information Science
    • Museum Studies
    • History
  • Interest in the accessibility, management, and preservation of digital collections
  • Interest in learning new tools and technologies
  • Comfortable performing repetitive tasks
  • Organized and detail oriented

To be eligible to participate in the Internship Program, students must meet the three following enrollment criteria:

  • The student must be 18 years or older currently enrolled as a full-time student at an accredited college or university
  • The student must have completed at least the first semester of their freshman year (At least at the time of application)
  • Provide proof of legal right to work in the United States
