The Museum of Modern Art is currently accepting applications for an Assistant Educator, Interpretation, Research and Digital Learning to join MoMA’s Learning and Engagement Department.

The Interpretation, Research, and Digital Learning (IRDL) team is part of the Learning and Engagement Department, which connects audiences with art and supports MoMA’s evolving relationship with communities and the broader public through learning, interpretation, community engagement, and public programming.

The Assistant Educator will play a vital role in fostering online communities and developing compelling, accessible, and inclusive digital content that supports audience learning and engagement online. The role will focus primarily on MoMA’s Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs) on Coursera, which provide learning experiences about modern and contemporary art, photography, design, fashion, painting, architecture, and different strategies for teaching with art, and currently reach more than 1.2 million learners from over 250 countries and territories.

The ideal candidate is highly collaborative and possesses the interpersonal and communication skills to interact easily and professionally with a diverse group of colleagues within the institution and externally. Given the high volume of projects, the Assistant Educator must have the ability to use their organization and communication skills to juggle multiple and competing priorities.

Responsibilities

  • Coordinates and project manages all aspects of the IRDL teams online course program, including budget tracking, communications, curriculum development and digital content production.
  • Develops and reviews content (including text, video, audio) for online courses, moma.org, and other platforms, foregrounding audience needs and inclusive interpretation practices.
  • Develops and implements participatory approaches to engagement in virtual programs, course discussion forums, on moma.org, YouTube, and social media.
  • Interacts with course participants, responding to questions, hosting forums, gathering feedback to inform future courses and learning strategies.
  • Collaborates with course instructors, Membership, the Creative Team, Learning and Engagement staff, and others to plan and communicate (via e-news and social) a regular cadence of programs, content, and opportunities for creative participation for learners.
  • Develops creative and accessible copy, including e-newsletters for Coursera learners, to regularly communicate and drive engagement with those offerings.
  • Drafts image descriptions for online courses, evaluates existing language and content for sensitivities, and ideates other strategies to ensure our content is accessible to people from a wide variety of backgrounds.
  • Communicates project details, including budgets, quotes, timelines, production information, and project outcomes to appropriate stakeholders to inform decision making.
  • Provides administrative and project management support for other digital learning initiatives, including gathering image assets, clearing image rights, scheduling, following up on deadlines, and archiving course materials.
  • Monitors and reports regularly on online course analytics, reviewing and responding to learner feedback. Uses audience insights, including quantitative and qualitative feedback, to inform the Museum’s digital learning strategy.
  • Performs any other duties reasonably related to the functions described above.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in art history, museum studies, museum education or related field, and three or more years progressively related experience working in museums or the cultural sector, or equivalent combination.
  • Interest in and enthusiasm for modern and contemporary art.
  • Commitment to access, equity, and inclusion in approach to content creation and audience engagement.
  • Strong written and verbal skills; interest and ability in writing and developing content for a wide range of audiences, differentiating for tone, accessibility of language and ideas, and content focus.
  • Understanding of how digital platforms are used for learning and audience engagement, community building, and how content needs differ across platforms.
  • Experience working professionally and collaboratively as a team, across departments, and with external partners. Ability to build relationships and consensus.
  • Strong organizational and project management skills with high attention to detail and ability to work on multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Ability to communicate professionally in all formats.

Preferred Skills And Experience

  • Familiarity and experience with content management systems.
  • Experience conducting original, independent research.
  • Interest in or experience with analytics and using quantitative and qualitative user feedback.
  • Interest and experience in organizing virtual public programs.
  • Fluency in Spanish and an interest in and ability to produce and review content for Spanish-speaking audiences.
