The South Street Seaport Museum, located in the heart of the South Street Seaport Historic District in New York City, preserves and interprets the history of New York as a great port city. Founded in 1967, and designated by Congress as America’s National Maritime Museum in 1998, the Museum houses an extensive collection of works of art and artifacts, a maritime reference library, exhibition galleries, and education spaces, working nineteenth-century print shops, and an active fleet of historic vessels to provide interactive exhibits and experiences to 50,000 visitors and hands-on educational programs for 12,000 students, in a typical year, to tell the story of “Where New York Begins.” The Seaport Museum is seeking a Grants Manager with the primary responsibility of securing support from foundations, government agencies, and corporations for general operating, programmatic, and capital purposes. Reporting to the Vice President for External Affairs, the Grants Manager will strengthen and expand the Seaport Museum’s institutional giving portfolio and maximize its fundraising potential.
The Grants Manager will:
· Identify, cultivate, solicit and steward a portfolio of current and prospective foundations, government agencies, and corporations.
· Develop letters of inquiry, proposals, general correspondence, acknowledgments, and reports for institutional donors.
· Work with Collections, Programming, Education, and Waterfront staff and the External Affairs Team to identify program-specific funding opportunities and get the latest updates, statistics, and anecdotes to create the most compelling packages for funder solicitations and reports.
· Engage with Finance and other departments to develop budgets to support programs and proposals.
· Prepare and compile all components of each grant submission, ensuring that the proposal is formatted, packaged, and submitted in accordance with granting agency requirements.
· Maintain a system for recording and tracking grant requests, proposals, awards and related programmatic outcomes and funding metrics through statistical and organizational information.
· Oversee and monitor the Seaport Museum’s compliance with funding agreements and sponsorship contracts with an emphasis on adherence to budget and project scope, as well as sponsor benefits fulfillment.
· Provide support with preparation of reporting materials for the Board of Trustees, and take minutes at quarterly Board meetings.
· Assist with day-of preparations for all cultivation events. (Occasional nights and weekends required with advance notice.)
· Participate in the execution of annual Gala fundraising benefit.
Requirements:
· Bachelor’s Degree required, advanced degrees preferred.
· Minimum 3-5 years of relevant work experience in fundraising, government affairs, arts administration, or similar areas.
· Must be highly-motivated and organized.
· Must be a strong writer with the ability to synthesize complex program concepts into compelling proposals and reports and possess excellent verbal communication skills.
· Ability to work independently and manage multiple priorities and projects at once, be detail- oriented and work well under deadline.
· Ability to establish effective working relationships with staff members, external contacts, and donors at all levels.
· Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and Google Workspace.
· Experience working with Raiser’s Edge, ticketing software, and financial data a plus.
