Description

As a highly engaged member of the Conservation team, the Assistant Objects Conservator cares for objects in our holdings and collections under the direction of the Objects Conservator and the Chief Conservator.

Responsibilities:

  • Perform a full range of technical examination and treatment procedures on objects in our encyclopedic collection
  • Conduct minor treatments on textiles
  • Maintain accurate conservation records
  • Conduct archival and scientific research, and work with living artists to gather information about the creation, preservation, and display of artworks in the collection
  • Evaluate and process external loan requests
  • Oversee interns and assist them with conservation treatment and other related projects 
  • Participate in integrated pest management by identifying insects and combating infestations of collection materials as well as in disaster preparedness
  • Other duties and tasks as assigned

Requirements

Qualifications:

  • Graduate degree in conservation from a recognized training program or equivalent experience, with a specialization in objects
  • Thorough understanding of current best practices in the field of conservation as well as of the American Institute for Conservation (AIC) Code of Ethics and Guidelines for Practice
  • Strong knowledge of physical and chemical deterioration mechanisms for objects; working knowledge of deterioration mechanisms of paintings, paper, and/or textiles
  • Exemplary hand skills and experience with conservation treatments, including reversal of old repairs, consolidation, surface cleaning, structural stabilization, and compensation for loss
  • Demonstrated experience performing conservation documentation using digital photography, X-radiography, and multi-band imaging (MBI); familiarity with X-ray fluorescence spectroscopy (XRF), polarized light microscopy (PLM), and paint cross-section analysis
  • Ability to prioritize tasks, manage multiple projects simultaneously, and work effectively under pressure to meet deadlines
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Team player, able to participate in the overall goals of the Conservation department and to work with Museum staff to ensure the care of our collections

FLSA status: Non-exempt

Schedule: 35 hours per week, Monday through Friday, 9 am to 5 pm, with occasional weekend and evening hours. Some travel is required to support the Museum’s exhibition and loan program. Eighty percent of the work in this position will be spent on activities related to direct care as defined by the AAM.
