World War II Home Front Museum Site Director

The Museum Site Director oversees the general well-being and daily operations of the World War II Home Front Museum located at the Historic Coast Guard Station on St. Simons Island, GA.

In addition to the operational role, the successful candidate will be an historian interested in acquiring knowledge of Coastal Georgia history, specifically the World War II Home Front experience.  They will join the Curator and Education Director to expand the expertise of the organization in terms of historic preservation, interpretation, research, and programming. This role will be both behind the scenes and in front of audiences.

 

Requirements

Qualifications for the Museum Site Manager:

  • Bachelor’s degree in public history or museum studies, preferably master’s degree.
  • At least three years of relevant work experience, including knowledge of and experience with facility administration and operations, preferably with historic sites and/or museums.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills; attention to detail; planning and organizational skills; and strong interpersonal skills, demonstrated by an advanced degree, advanced training, and/or career experience.
  • Skill in providing excellent customer service.
  • Highly self-motivated, and a team player.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office and point of sales programs.

Essential duties and responsibilities of the Museum Site Manager:

  • Direct the daily operations of the museum, including visitor services, ticket sales, programs, housekeeping, safety, and security.
  • Provide information to visitors about local World War II history, the historic site, and the museum collection in coordination with the Curator.
  • Coordinate education services including school tours with the Education Director.
  • Conduct docent/volunteer training and provide updated and accurate reference materials for site interpretation, procedures, emergency preparedness, and policies.
  • Participate in developing and presenting Society programming including, but not limited to:
    • Specialized tours
    • Exhibits
    • Written materials
  • Serve as the Historical Society’s point of contact for the Georgia World War II Heritage Trail, a statewide marketing initiative.
  • Ensure the safety and maintenance of a high quality and historic facility, the grounds, and all equipment, including maintenance of exhibits and interactives.
  • Operate point of sale for store purchases, tickets, and memberships, as needed.
  • Follow all proper protocols for secure and accurate financial records and transactions.
  • Coordinate group tours for both museums.
  • With the Executive Director, develop the museum’s operating budget; meet or exceed budget targets.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

The World War II Home Front Museum is open seven days a week except for major holidays. It is expected that the Museum Site Manager will work Monday – Friday, although some night and weekend work may be necessary. The Museum Site Manager is responsible for effective administration, management, operation, and interpretation of the World War II Home Front Museum.

The museum opened in December 2018 and is a popular tourist destination and educational resource for schools. The financially self-sustaining museum is operated by Coastal Georgia Historical Society.
