Position Summary

The Education and Engagement Specialist supports the mission and goals of Maine Maritime Museum by giving top priority to developing and teaching interpretive educational programs and fostering a supportive relationship with community families, schools, and organizations.

Under direct supervision of the Manager of Education and working in close collaboration with public programs, curatorial, marketing, and other museum staff and volunteers, this position is responsible for designing and teaching innovative youth, adult, and multi-generational educational programming, coordinating and leading school field trips, organizing summer youth camps, developing partnerships with community organizations, developing in-gallery programming connected to permanent and temporary exhibitions, and assisting with other education and museum programming as needed.

The goal of public programs outreach is to educate the community and a worldwide audience about the important role of Maine in regional and global maritime activities by offering relevant, compelling, and engaging educational programs that connect the past to contemporary and future issues while increasing attendance and building community and financial support for the Museum.

Essential Job Functions

  • Serve as an educator for K-12 school field trips, in-school programs, adult programming, and in-gallery programming.
  • Coordinate and schedule field trips and Ecology Cruises.
  • Schedule, oversee, and facilitate summer youth programs: Kennebec Explorers Day Camp, Mariners Adventure Camp, and Crosscurrents.
  • Serve as a liaison to local communities to assess ways in which MMM can leverage its resources and advance its mission through creative programming that meets community needs while growing museum attendance.
  • Collaborate with Manager of Education to develop and refine interpretive plans for the permanent collection and exhibits that offer new and varied entry points for visitor-learning.
  • Collaborate with Manager of Education to design and develop online learning content.
  • Work with local teachers and the Manager of Education to continually adapt, coordinate, and lead Sense of Place programming.
  • Research, design, and implement interpretive materials (analog and digital) for permanent galleries and temporary exhibits with a specific focus on experiential learning.
  • Maintain data regarding constituents served and programs offered, including school tour numbers, student visits, teacher workshops, public programs, audience attendance, revenue earned etc.
  • Assist in developing museum lecture and workshop series that explore temporary exhibit themes and advance community dialogue.
  • Work with the Volunteer Program Manager and appropriate Museum staff to coordinate and provide volunteer-staff trainings for educational programming.
  • Assist in grant writing for program funding and assist with public programs and other duties as required.
  • Attend staff meetings and other meetings as assigned.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Education, Museum Education, Art History, History or relevant field and/or experience.
  • 3+ years of museum education or education experience (experience teaching youth and adults preferred).
  • Proficiency in MS Office Suite.
  • Excellent time-management and organizational skills with the ability to work as a team-player.
  • Ability to be flexible and manage multiple tasks with minimal supervision.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Excellent object-based teaching and experiential learning skills
  • Physically able to lift up to 35 pounds and stand for extended periods to facilitate educational and outreach programs.
  • Occasional nights and weekends required.
