GLOBAL Digitization Intern at the New York Botanical Garden

The Digitization Intern – GLOBAL is a temporary, full-time position with a pay range of $17-$18 per hour that will assist with imaging and databasing 200,000 NYBG bryophyte and 50,000 lichen herbarium specimens in the William and Lynda Steere Herbarium at The New York Botanical Garden as part of a multi-institutional NSF-funded project: Digitization TCN: Collaborative Research: Building a Global Consortium of Bryophytes and Lichens: Keystones of Cryptobiotic Communities.

Additionally, this position supports, through actions and conduct, NYBG’s Inclusion, Diversity, Equity and Accessibility initiatives and helps to build and maintain an inclusive organization culture throughout the institution.

Schedule: Monday-Friday, 9am-5pm.

Specific Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Capture digital images of specimens
  • Handle (select and refile) herbarium specimens
  • Transcribe specimen data from digital images into database, including georeferencing
  • Participate in public outreach

Requirements:

  • Coursework in Biology and/or museum or library studies
  • Experience with digital photography and herbarium procedures preferred
  • Current undergraduate, graduate student, or recent graduate
  • Be able to work closely with others as part of a team
  • Be able to communicate effectively if working remotely
  • Be able to work efficiently and with attention to detail
  • Familiarity with global geography
  • Understanding of written languages other than English a plus
