Join the Smithsonian’s National Portrait Gallery as our next Social Media Content Specialist! 

This position is located in the Communications Department, within the Office of Audience Engagement (AE) at the National Portrait Gallery, Smithsonian Institution. The museum is devoted to the research, acquisition, exhibition, care and management of art relating to U.S. history, biography and the study of portraiture.  Through its exhibitions, programming, website, press, social media and other digital initiatives, the museum reaches a national and international audience of millions, serving scholars, educators, students, researchers and the general public. 

The Social Media Content Specialist is a creative and skilled writer, editor, and producer of original multimedia content, experienced working in a fast-paced publishing environment. The Social Media Content Specialist has a strong ability to inform, educate, inspire, and spark interest from the Museum’s diverse, online audiences. 

This position will include: 

Researching, developing, editing, and publishing original content for the Museum’s social media channels (Meta/Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, YouTube and LinkedIn). 

Developing the museum’s overarching social media strategy with input from Head of Communications, Audience Engagement and Curatorial to ensure content is accurate, educational and engaging while supporting the mission and goals of the National Portrait Gallery and Smithsonian Institution. 

Managing daily communications with an audience of more than 300,000 followers across channels, responding to public affairs inquiries and comments as needed.

Applying exceptional editorial judgement and creativity to produce high-quality, impactful content while following all established editorial procedures, protocols, and guidelines for publishing content suitable for the Museum’s diverse, online audiences and that supports the Museum’s mission, goals, and vision. 

Liaising with Head of Communications and other staff on issues of crisis management as they arise in tandem with overall communications strategy.

Producing and editing short form video for Museum’s social media channels, creating storyboards and narrative arcs to ensure viewer engagement while also maintaining the museum’s accessibility standards with captioning, alt text, and design elements.

Ability to conduct online and live social media activities, such as live tweeting, Tweetups, InstaMeets, Google Hangouts, and other real-time sessions, which appeal to a culturally diverse audience, and reflect the quality social media and educational goals desired by the museum.  

Contributing as an integral team member at large-scale events including press previews, exhibition openings, public programs and the museum’s biennial red carpet gala.

Selecting appropriate stories, programs, links and images for daily publishing from existing Museum digital archives and the Museum’s online collection for publishing to the Museum’s social media channels. 

Editing existing copy from external content partners for accuracy and style, in adherence with all established brand, style and editorial guidelines, procedures and protocols for publishing content suitable for the Museum’s diverse, online audiences and that supports the Museum’s mission and goals. 

Monitoring key performance metrics for measuring the impact of published digital content across all Museum digital channels and platforms. Analyzing, reviewing and incorporating key findings into original content creation and publishing approach.  Producing quarterly analytics and special campaign reports in Releasd.

Establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with colleagues in Curatorial and Audience Engagement to ensure information related to overall social media content strategy and publishing program flows between departments across the organization. 

Collaborating with other Smithsonian museums and outside institutions on cross-market engagements.

This is not a federal position, but a grade 9 trust position. The salary range is $61,947-$70,207.  The Smithsonian Institution embraces diversity and equal employment opportunity.

Requirements

  • Possess a bachelor’s degree or commensurate experience
  • Strong communication skills, both oral and written
  • Ability to take ownership of work with minimal direction and supervision
  • Experience in a large, complex non-profit organization preferred
  • Understanding of and dedication to the mission of the National Portrait Gallery
