Job Title: Permanent Collection Associate

Job Status: Full-time, temporary. 1 year grant-based position.

El Museo del Barrio, founded by a coalition of Puerto Rican educators, artists, and activists, is the nation’s leading Latino and Latin American cultural institution. The Museum welcomes visitors of all backgrounds to discover the artistic landscape of these communities through its extensive Permanent Collection, varied exhibitions and publications, bilingual public programs, educational activities, festivals, and special events.

SCOPE AND PURPOSE OF ROLE

The Permanent Collection Associate Curator is responsible for assisting with the research, development, interpretation, documentation, and strategic growth of the El Museo del Barrio’s Permanent Collection towards a major collections-focused initiative. The incumbent will support the Curatorial Department in recommending policies, implementing actions, and liaising with a broad and interested public, including artists, community members, colleagues, and students as related to the Permanent Collection. The incumbent is responsible for the supervision of interns, volunteers, and contract workers, and for the productive interaction of the Curatorial Staff with other departments. The Permanent Collection Associate Curator serves as a host, spokesperson, and art historian, professionally representing El Museo del Barrio.

RESPONSIBILTIES

Administration and Development

-Assists in the ongoing research related to the Permanent Collection, its access, and dissemination

-Develops and implements research and interdisciplinary uses for the Permanent Collection, including commissioning and authoring collection entries and related writing; coordinating artist interviews; and other creative implementation

-Updates TMS and other research repositories, both physical and digital, including artist archives

-Oversees editing, translation, design, printing, and production of signage, invitations, brochures, and catalogues; develops and implements creative interpretive public programming in collaboration with the Education Department.

-Serves as in-house manager for all aspects of the production and maintenance of Permanent Collection, including coordination with outside contractors including photographers, conservators, and art handlers

-Produces and supervises correspondence, checklists, contracts, press and educational materials, project budgets, development narratives and reports, and other documentation.

-Supports the department in defining new Permanent Collection acquisitions, including cultivating donors or funders, researching works for availability, provenance, and price

-Oversees projects and timelines related to Permanent Collection-based activities

 

Other Related Duties

-Supervision of volunteers, interns, and professional contract workers as necessary to execute many of the tasks described herein.

-Assist in defining and developing institutional goals and other needs related to the Permanent Collection, its care, storage, and display.

-Other tasks as assigned and agreed upon by employee and supervisor.

QUALIFICATIONS

– Master’s Degree in Art History, Fine Arts, Museum Studies, or a related field

-Knowledge of El Museo del Barrio’s collection and history

-3 to 5 years of curatorial or museum experience

-Spanish/English bilingual skills

-Fluency in various computer- and digital imaging systems, especially TMS, Microsoft Office, and One Drive

-Excellent oral, written, and interpersonal skills

-Ability to manage simultaneous priorities

-Ability to work well with various constituencies, and supervise volunteers, interns, professional contract workers, and others
