Digitization Internship at the Maryland Center for History and Culture

Job Title: Digitization Intern

Location: Baltimore, MD


Summary

The Maryland Center for History and Culture (MCHC) seeks a summer intern to help increase the accessibility of Museum and Library collections through digitization. Working closely with the Imaging Services Technician & Staff Photographer and the Digital Collections & Metadata Manager, as well as other members of the Museum and Library collection teams, the intern will capture images, record metadata, research, and help publish collections to MCHC’s Digital Collections portal. The intern will receive hands-on experience with scanning, gain a practical understanding of metadata standards and best practices in digital collections, along with experience using the digital asset management system (DAMS) ResourceSpace. This is a great opportunity for a student or recent graduate to gain hands-on technical experience and help improve collection accessibility.

 

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Scan photographs and other archival material in accordance with Library standards and using a flatbed scanner
  • Handle rare and fragile material
  • Create quality metadata for new digitization that conforms to existing standards and schemas
  • Consult internal and external resources to generate metadata for newly digitized items
  • Parse out existing metadata according to organizational standards
  • Conduct research to verify, enhance, and update legacy metadata
  • Utilize controlled vocabularies, including Library of Congress name authority files and subject headings

 

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Currently enrolled as an undergraduate, pursuing a graduate degree in information studies, history, or a related program, or a recent graduate from such a program
  • Ability to perform repetitive tasks (scanning)
  • Photography experience is a plus
  • Ability to handle documents with care
  • Strong communication, organizational, and interpersonal skills
  • Close attention to detail
  • Proficient with technology and able to learn new systems and software
  • Flexible and able to work with minimal supervision
  • Selected interns will undergo a background check.

 

ABOUT THE POSITION

The Digitization Intern will receive a stipend of $1,500 for 12 weeks of work and receive a year-long membership to the Maryland Center for History and Culture.
