Position Summary

Under the supervision of the Director of Education, the Manager of Gallery Education organizes and manages a variety of gallery education programs with the goal of engaging different audiences with our collection and exhibitions in ways that demonstrate how art is both relevant and important and can enhance the lives of individuals and communities in unexpected ways. The primary responsibility of this position is leading the volunteer docent program and supervising the summer Gallery Interpreters. In addition, the Manager of Gallery Education helps to develop interpretive materials for our visitors and assist with special programming for a variety of audiences. Some weekend, Monday holiday and evening work is required.

Major Duties and Responsibilities (Essential Functions)

  • Represent and articulate the significance of the Clark education philosophy and engagement approach of teaching with our collection and special exhibitions to visitors, community members, and fellow staff
  • Maintain and develop regular and special gallery education programs (in-person and digital) that engage a variety of audiences (including schools, tour groups, and the general public) with the Clark collections and exhibitions and that demonstrate a range of ways for meaningfully engagement
  • Plan and deliver docent training program
  • Manage corps of docents including recruitment, training, and coaching (assisting with talk preparation, observing docents leading gallery talks, giving feedback and helping them to realize personal strengths, shared standards, and areas for improvement)
  • With the Director of Education and the Department Coordinator, hire, train and supervise summer Gallery Interpreters (usually college students)
  • Lead gallery talks as needed and as a model for docents and others to learn about the Clark approach
  • Actively participate in department meetings.
  • Research other museums’ activities and professional literature about best practices in gallery education programming.
  • Maintain communication with schools to ensure that our programs meet teachers’ needs (are aligned with state and federal standards) and so that teachers are aware of how our programs can enhance their curricula
  • Help lead specialized education programs for targeted audiences, both established programs such as Meet Me at the Clark, Reflections Talks, Head Start with Art (with the Manager of Community Engagement Programs), etc.; propose new program initiatives
  • Help develop a variety of interpretive materials to encourage different audiences to engage with our collections and other aspects of the Clark experience
  • Represent the Education Department at internal and community meetings as appropriate
  • Perform other similar duties as requested by supervisor

Minimum Qualifications

Education, Training, and Skills

  • Art History or Museum Studies background
  • Curriculum development and teaching experience 
  • Previous experience in program development and leadership
  • Master’s degree required

Work Experience

  • Minimum of 3 years relevant experience preferred.

  • Work Environment: Work will be performed in an office environment and museum spaces. The noise level in the work environment is usually low to moderate.
